“Be a lady they said. Your skirt is too short. Your shirt is too low. Your pants are too tight. Don’t show so much skin. Don’t show your thighs. Don’t show your breasts. Be a lady they said. Don’t talk too loud. Don’t talk too much. Don’t take up space. Don’t sit like that. Don’t stand like that. Don’t be intimidating. Why are you so miserable? Don’t be a bitch. Don’t be so bossy. Don’t be assertive. Don’t overact. Don’t be so emotional. Don’t cry. Don’t yell. Don’t swear. Don’t complain. Cook his dinner. Keep him happy. That’s a woman’s job. You’ll make a good wife someday. Take his last name. You hyphenated your name? Crazy feminist. Give him children.
You don’t want children? You will someday. You’ll change your mind”

These are the opening lines of a poem written by the twenty-two-year-old Camille Rainville and performed by the former Sex and the City star, now turned activist and politician, Cynthia Nixon.

The video, now viral and incredibly powerful, created for the Girls Girls Girls magazine, analyzes the various meanings of the term “be a lady,” paired with strong images from pop culture. Watch it here.

For centuries, women have demonstrated with their intelligence and skills that they are much more advanced than how society perceived them. Using artistic language as a unique vision has helped women artists worldwide challenge these stereotypes.

Artàporter has chosen to bring to life an exhibition dedicated to celebrating the strength and diversity of women’s nature in the contemporary art world. Passionate, talented, with a strong artistic voice, they break down barriers and reshape the artistic landscape.

THE EXHIBITION

The exhibition, signed by Artàporter and curated by Alyona Kosareva, will take place at the Con/Temporary Space Santa Teresa in Turin, from January 20 to 31, 2024.
