MailIn November 2025, the city of Turin officially received the recognition of Compassionate City from Public Health Palliative Care International (PHPCI). Its mission is to encourage community participation in caring for people by broadening and redefining the collective responsibilities of citizens, while engaging institutions to ensure the conditions in which meaningful change can take place.
It is within this framework that the Community of practice on Care and Proximity was established: its mission is to promote a shared pathway around the theme of solidarity, with the goal of building stronger communities and deepening attention to different forms of vulnerability.
Launched in February 2026, the initiative has opened a space for dialogue among local organizations committed to fostering community participation in the care of people. It represents an opportunity to share experiences and develop common projects through moments of exchange and participatory design.
At its core is a vision of care as a collective responsibility: while intersecting with experiences of illness, the pathway also seeks to address other forms of vulnerability and social hardship, including poverty, isolation, marginalization, mental health challenges, and inequalities—helping to shape a compassionate city attentive to each of these dimensions.
