What is PinkRoad?

PinkRoad is an innovative social-impact startup created to improve women’s experience of urban mobility and increase perceived safety in public spaces. Through a mobile app, PinkRoad enables verified adult women to connect, organise a journey and share it with others travelling in the same direction. Its purpose is to turn technology into a tool that creates real relationships, mutual support and an active local community.

How it works

Users can create a new journey or request to join an existing one. Through the integrated chat, they can get to know each other, choose a meeting point and organise the journey together.

The app includes:

  • identity verification through official documents;
  • geolocation during the journey;
  • advance journey planning;
  • chats connected to travel groups;
  • user reviews;
  • SOS tools and quick access to the emergency number;
  • alerts sent to selected emergency contacts.

Journeys can currently be shared on foot or by public transport. In the future, PinkRoad also plans to integrate taxi and car-sharing services.

The PinkStop network

The digital platform is supported by a local network of PinkStops: shops, venues, associations and community spaces that become visible and accessible reference points across the city. PinkStops can be used as meeting places before a shared journey or as an initial point of contact when someone temporarily feels uncomfortable or unsafe. They do not replace the police, emergency services, anti-violence centres or specialised organisations, but they help build a more aware and prepared local support network.

What makes PinkRoad different?

Many personal safety applications mainly provide alerts, monitoring tools or remote assistance. PinkRoad starts from the strength of community and uses technology to encourage real-life connections between women sharing the same route and the same need.

The project therefore combines three dimensions:

Technology, through a mobile platform dedicated to urban journeys.

Community, through shared routes and relationships between verified users.

Local presence, through PinkStops and partnerships with companies, public bodies, associations and mobility operators.

Impact and future development

PinkRoad aims to make women’s mobility needs and experiences in public spaces more visible. As the platform grows, fully anonymised and aggregated data may help identify mobility patterns, travel times, urban habits and levels of perceived safety. These insights could support companies, universities, public authorities and mobility operators in designing services and interventions that respond more closely to women’s real experiences. PinkRoad’s model is designed to be replicated city by city, adapting the community, PinkStop network and local partnerships to the characteristics of each territory.
