Social Economy in Europe: Contributing to Competitiveness and Prosperity – A New OECD Report
On December 5, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) published Social Economy in Europe – Contributing to Competitiveness and Prosperity, a report analyzing the state of the social economy across Europe.
As noted in the introduction, the document “offers strategies and tools to implement international strategies,” focusing in particular “on the contribution that social economy actors can make to achieving identified policy priorities, especially in key sectors such as care work and access to affordable housing.”
The report identifies and analyzes three key enabling conditions essential for the success of the social economy: institutional arrangements across different levels of government, fiscal measures, and support for enterprises.
Through practical examples and lessons learned, it also provides recommendations for public authorities, social economy organizations, and other stakeholders.
Social Economy in Europe also presents particularly interesting data on the social economy, both at the European level and within individual countries. Among the highlights, the report emphasizes its importance in job creation, with 6.3% of employed people in Europe working in the sector, and in turnover, with over €912 billion in the EU.
