ECOCRED INVESTS IN HOMES4ALL TO TEST NEW TOOLS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

Ecocred S.p.A. announced the finalization of a collaboration with important social value, in line with its ESG values and projects. Ecocred in fact enters the Capital of Homes4All SBrl B Corp by subscribing and paying a share of € 50,000.

Ecocred’s goal is to provide a complete consulting service and assistance in the field of tax relief in building interventions also with a strong social impact such as the removal of architectural barriers.

Artàporter has chosen to bring to life an exhibition dedicated to celebrating the strength and diversity of women’s nature in the contemporary art world. Passionate, talented, with a strong artistic voice, they break down barriers and reshape the artistic landscape.

Master Executive in Disability Management & Inclusive Thinking

In March 2024, SAA School of Management will launch the second edition of the Executive Master in Disability Management & Inclusive Thinking.

The initiative responds to the growing awareness of the importance of workplace inclusion and the need to adopt innovative strategies to ensure an accessible and sustainable work environment.

Upon completion of the training, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the guiding principles, objectives, and regulatory references underlying the establishment and role of the Disability Employment Manager.
  • Understand the needs and roles of the main stakeholders and actors involved in the integration process and the networks activated for this purpose.
  • Understand the phases of bio-psycho-social analysis and profiling and personal and social integration in organizations.
  • Understand and apply the main methods and activities of reasonable accommodation for people with disabilities within the organization.
  • Understand and apply the principles and resulting guidelines of the main methodologies for the development of new inclusive products and services to support inclusion.

Atelier Riforma among the winners of SocialTech4EU

The social startup, part of TSI, Atelier Riforma is among the winners of the SocialTech4EU EU call.

They won both the first call, with which they obtained a grant of €3k that they used to increase their skills in digital marketing (thanks to a wonderful course of the company No Panic), and the second of €20k, with which they’re carring out a feasibility study on computer vision applied to the classification of textile waste, that they’re developing together with their tech partner Sensor Reply IT.

Thanks to these grants they will be able to give another technological boost to their social startup and they are extremely happy that their project has emerged!

A new meeting of the community of practice on the circular economy

Following the success of the event “Circular Economy: the city at stake” held during the Circular Days Festival, the organizations within the TSI ecosystem that are part of the Circular Economy Community of Practice gathered on Wednesday, December 20, for the last meeting of the year.

Hosted at the Beeozanam Community Hub, representatives from 13 organizations participated in the meeting. It was an opportunity to review the projects initiated throughout the year and, more importantly, to envision and plan new initiatives for 2024 through collective discussion.

Within the context of the circular economy and the promotion of sustainable initiatives, there was a shared interest in continuing the Cleanup activity carried out in September. This ecological walk through the parks of Turin engaged the community and local organizations in a collective action to clean up waste, contributing to the improvement of the environment and the well-being of our community.

The agenda also includes new networking and training sessions on circular economy topics and an intensive communication campaign targeting citizens and the city of Turin.

One of the missions of the initiated Community of Practice is precisely to promote projects and initiatives by leveraging the skills and knowledge of the participating organizations, extending them for the benefit of the community and its residents.

Sofidel wins the Reporting Oscar with the Integrated Report created in collaboration with Amapola

The 2022 Integrated Report of Sofidel, leading Italian group in the production of paper for hygienic and domestic use, obtained first place at the Oscar di Bilancio (Reporting Oscars), in the “Large unlisted companies” category. At his side in the reporting project, the consultancy company Amapola, specialized in sustainability and communication, among the partners of Torino Social Impact.

The Reporting Oscar, now in its 59th edition is promoted by the Italian Public Relations Federation (FERPI), Italian Stock Exchange and Bocconi University. The event confirms itself as a valuable observatory on the state of the art of reporting in Italy, in a moment of particular turmoil regulatory. The initiative rewards organizations that report their actions in a rigorous manner and share the results with stakeholders, with attention to economic aspects and increasingly to the environmental and social dimension.

Funds TOgether – the UniTO crowdfunding project for Research and Innovation

Funds TOgether: with the aim of supporting interdisciplinary projects, both by securing additional funds and promoting greater brand visibility for the University, the project involves the online launch of 5 campaigns on the GINGER platform and financial support in the form of co-financing from UniTO. When a campaign reaches 100% of its initial financial goal, the University will double the funds, up to a maximum of 10,000 euros per project.

From December 11, 2023, donations can be made on the IdeaGinger platform to collectively achieve the goals we believe in: the physical and mental health of humans, animal care, environmental conservation, the use of artificial intelligence, and new technologies to support disabilities.

The 5 projects selected for the 2023 edition will be officially presented to stakeholders and potential donors on Friday, December 15, from 4:45 pm to 7:00 pm at the Aula Magna of Cavallerizza Reale, Via Verdi 9, Turin. A Christmas aperitif will follow to provide space for networking.

CA Auto Bank and I3P unveil Digital Factory, the new open innovation platform for the future of sustainable mobility

CA Auto Bank, a mobility bank operating in 19 countries, and I3P, the Incubator of Politecnico di Torino, are jointly introducing Digital Factory, a novel open innovation platform designed for Italian and international start-ups and SMEs. The initiative aims to discover the most innovative solutions and technologies to drive the digital transformation of the Bank. Projects submitted should fall within one or more of the following areas: banking, digitization and artificial intelligence, mobility, and sustainability. The selected companies will have the opportunity to engage in field testing, developing a Proof-of-Concept (PoC) to refine ongoing innovation processes at CA Auto Bank.

Digital Factory is a permanent initiative with free participation.  Project applications should be submitted via the website. Each submission will be assessed by I3P and CA Auto Bank. Applicants with compelling use cases will be contacted by the Digital Factory team to collaboratively build a business case for presentation directly to CA Auto Bank.

This initiative is part of Start&Pulse, the European program of the Crédit Agricole Consumer Finance Group dedicated to start-ups and focused on open innovation. Digital Factory is part of a sector where technological evolution has given rise to new consumer needs, offering significant opportunities for growth and service development. Digitalization means adapting all business processes to the developments of the digital age, with speed and operational efficiency playing increasingly crucial roles. Against this backdrop, start-ups and SMEs can give further impetus to responsible growth and value creation for the planet.

Digital Factory’s new platform follows in the footsteps of similar initiatives launched in 2020 and 2022, resulting in collaborations with innovative start-ups such as Stip and Reefilla. These young ventures, established in Italy and developed with an international focus, now support CA Auto Bank in revamping its customer service management, leveraging artificial intelligence and introducing new user experiences dedicated to electric mobility.

European Projects Hub: Erasmus+ projects launched

A new phase is underway for the European Projects Hub for Social Economy, an initiative launched in collaboration with Weco Impresa Sociale, thanks to the support of the Chamber of Commerce of Turin and the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation.

In November, a support phase for project ideas emerged during workshops on the Erasmus+, LIFE, and Horizon programs held between June and September. Over 50 entities from the TSI ecosystem participated.

Currently, 12 entities are undergoing an individual support process to make their project ideas eligible for the Erasmus+ program, specifically focusing on the small-scale partnership calls designed for newcomer entities or those with less experience. The deadline for submission is in spring 2024.

The project design support process, led by Weco Impresa Sociale, includes several one-hour online sessions at various checkpoints:

  • STEP 1: Definition of the project idea, identified sector, and program-related priorities | November 2-10
  • STEP 2: Identification of the European and/or local partnership, project idea review | November 13-29
  • STEP 3: Drafting a project outline focusing on the target group, activities, impact, and follow-up | November 30 – December 15
  • STEP 4: Budget definition and check on administrative documentation to be produced | December 18 – January 12
  • STEP 5: Final revision of the project document and uploading to the platform | January 15 – February 16

Torino Social Impact has also provided strategic partnerships for the entities, facilitating the formation of European partnerships.

A total of 9 projects will be presented in the spring window of the Erasmus+ Program funded by the European Commission.

Startup Party I3P 2023

Returning is the year-end celebration of the Politecnico di Torino Incubator, now in its 24th edition, which will take place on Tuesday, December 19th, at 5:00 PM, in-person at I3P!

At the heart of the event will be the many projects that animate the incubator, the innovative young companies that have been protagonists in 2023, and the appointment of the new “Startup of the Year of I3P“, selected for the results achieved during its growth journey.

Participants will have the opportunity to get to know the new startups that have joined I3P, meeting in person many young entrepreneurs dreaming of creating something new, and bidding farewell to the companies that are “graduating” this year after successfully completing their three-year incubation.

At the end of the event, the networking aperitif will be the perfect opportunity to exchange knowledge, contacts, and holiday greetings.

The NextEdu acceleration program to promote transformative learning solutions

The Investor Day of the second edition of the NextEdu acceleration program, dedicated to international EdTech realities, will take place on December 12th at 5:30 pm in the Duomo of OGR Torino.

NextEdu is the result of collaboration between xEdu, an EdTech startup accelerator, Fondazione Sviluppo e Crescita CRT, and OGR Torino, entities of Fondazione CRT.

The pre-enrollments for the fifth edition of the CUAP – Social Impact Assessment close on January 26th

After the success of previous editions, the professional development university course (CUAP) “Social Impact Assessment“, supported by the Chamber of Commerce of Turin and offered by the Competence Center for Social Impact Assessment within TSI, is back.

Until January 26th, you can pre-enroll in the University Course offered by the Department of Management at the University of Turin, in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Turin (members of the Committee for Social Entrepreneurship), the Piccatti Milanese Foundation, the Cottino Foundation, Tiresia, and the training organizations of Central Cooperatives (Il Nodo Consortium for Confcooperative Piemonte Nord and Inforcoop Ecipaa Piemonte for Legacoop Piemonte) and the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation.

The course aims to train third sector entities and social enterprises to adopt a strategic approach to the evaluation and management of the generated social impact, in line with the guidelines of the Social Entrepreneurship Committee of the Chamber of Commerce. The training is intended for organizations that want to enhance knowledge and skills in impact evaluation, especially for those in managerial and leadership roles and those involved in reporting the effectiveness and efficiency of activities in both economic-financial and social terms or those interested in integrating the two aspects.

Through a hybrid and highly innovative didactic approach, the CUAP combines theoretical and practical approaches aimed at identifying Impact Management strategies and their measurement. A final business case completes the sharing of learning among the participants themselves. The course addresses the evaluation of social impact applied to projects for accessing European, national, or local funding, as well as to major territorial, sporting, cultural, and congress events. It starts with the assumption that every event and systemic action brings about a change that can be measured and evaluated with specific techniques mastered by impact assessors.

At the end of the course, it will be possible to obtain certification, issued by Cepas, a third-party certifying body, and its registration in the national register of Impact Assessors, along with the digital “Open Badge” certification issued by Bestr.

For this edition as well, the online format has been maintained to spread the culture of impact assessment beyond the borders of Turin, with nationwide dissemination.

The workshop is part of the activities of the European project SEFIT – Social Ecosystem for Fair and Inclusive Transition, funded under the European Social Fund Plus. The Brodolini Foundation, as the Lead Partner, along with the City of Turin, Rethink Ireland, and the City of Cork, through mapping and analysis involving local actors and stakeholders, will identify the most pressing social challenges related to climate adaptation and digital innovations.

The workshop’s objective is to collaboratively identify ideas and proposals useful for drafting the CALL, which will be addressed to social organizations and innovators. It will make available €200,000.00 in grants to support projects proposing concrete solutions to the challenges of green and digital transition, particularly by demonstrating how innovations can be made more accessible to disadvantaged population groups.

The proceedings will be opened by the Councilor of the City of Turin for Ecological and Digital Transition, Innovation, Environment, Mobility, and Transportation, Chiara Foglietta, who will illustrate how the theme of digital and ecological transition is a priority for the City of Turin. Experts in the field will also participate, presenting the latest research and best practices, stimulating debate and the sharing of experiences among participants. The goal is to provide an analysis of current urban dynamics, examining opportunities and challenges related to the transition to more sustainable and socially responsible practices.

TSI in San Sebastian for the European Social Economy Conference

The Ministry of Labour and Social Economy organize in Donostia-San Sebastián – Social Economy Capital of Spain 2023- on November 13th and 14th 2023 the European Conference “Social Economy: People, Planet, Action”, within the framework of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

This European conference is a call for action to activate the full potential of major milestones, such as the United Nations Resolution on Social Economy and Solidarity or the European Social Economy Action Plan, as well as strengthening the visibility of these collective, solidarity and democratic models of entrepreneurship.

Turin, the capital of impact investing with the Impact Week of the European EVPA network

Over 1,000 impact players gathered at OGR Turin and Cottino Social Impact Campus from November 22 to 24

The European impact investing community gathered during the Impact Week in Turin from November 22 to 24 with the aim of identifying concrete proposals to promote a sustainable and resilient future for our economies and societies.

EVPA, the European network for impact investing, with Fondazione CRT and Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo as anchor partners, Cottino Social Impact Campus and Fondazione Time2 as content partners, and Torino Social Impact as the glue of the rich and varied impact network of a city that has earned the title of the capital of social economy in recent years, brought together over 1,000 leaders and professionals across the spectrum of impact finance to mobilize capital for transformative change.

Impact Week is EVPA‘s annual flagship event, providing an opportunity for a global community of changemakers to encounter cutting-edge ideas, discover new trends, and engage with partners to maximize their impact on people and the planet.

After visits to Cascina Fossata, Open Incet, Via Baltea – Laboratori di Barriera, and Toolbox Coworking, organized by the City of Turin, our territory took center stage at the opening event with Guido Bolatto, Secretary General of the Chamber of Commerce of Turin, Michela Favaro, Deputy Mayor of Turin, Alberto Francesco Anfossi, Secretary of the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation, and Andrea Varese, Secretary of the CRT Foundation.

The Impact Deal project was presented by Ciro Cattuto, Christian Racca, Stefania Coni, experts from TOP-IX, and companies involved in the project.

The Social Impact Stock Exchange was presented in a significant discussion with Davide Dal Maso, Jeremy Nicholls, Brigitte Fellahi-BROGNAUX, and Bruno Robino.

A new European network of impact cities was designed in a workshop with Raffaella Scalisi from TSI, Coos Santing Santing from ImpactCity The Hague, and Jonas Nipkow from Social Economy Berlin. Thanks to Mariken Gaanderse for the idea and to Oscar Ugarte from Seed Capital Bizkaia for his interest.

The vision of Torino Social Impact was highlighted thanks to Mario Calderini, who participated in the sessions “Accelerating towards the SDGs finish line” and “Beyond Compliance Reporting,” with Marella Caramazza, Karen E. Wilson, and Karim Harji.

The European Impact Investment Market

The European impact investment market is growing, according to EVPA’s latest study, estimating the European market for direct impact investments, i.e., investments by companies addressing social and environmental challenges, at €80 billion. Social impact investments have grown by a substantial 26% from 2020 to 2021.

However, despite this encouraging growth, impact investments still represent only 0.5% of the European traditional investment market. It is crucial to accelerate the trend to address today’s pressing social and environmental needs. With the approaching deadline of 2030 for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, we need more impact investments that take risks for innovative solutions to complex social and environmental challenges, from the climate crisis to sustainable food systems.

In this context, the impact community gathered in Turin provided concrete recommendations on how impact finance actors can better mobilize resources and promote collective impact action to scale the lasting change the world urgently needs.

With “Impact Together” as the main theme, Impact Week is also a space to connect work across sectors, connect, and collaborate to navigate through the world’s crises. The conversations and sessions provided practical insights and examples of innovative discoveries in impact finance to replicate what works and collectively achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

Who is EVPA

EVPA, now called Impact Europe, is the European network for impact investing, a unique network at the intersection of business and purpose, driven by knowledge and focused on impact. EVPA brings together over 300 members, a diverse group of capital providers (impact funds, companies, foundations, private equity, banks, public funders) and social innovators. Since its creation in 2004, EVPA has built a unique data hub for impact practices, trained over 1,000 impact champions, produced guidelines for defining standards and increasing impact investments, as well as for measuring and managing them. It also represents a strategic presence in the EU political sphere and plays a crucial role in global collaborations on its themes.

Seniores Online: the real and virtual platform for those over 65

On Thursday, November 30, 2023, at Rinascimenti Sociali, located at Via Maria Vittoria 38 in Turin, the presentation of “Seniores Online,” the platform for those over 65, will take place. A project by Torino Valley in collaboration with the Regional Coordination of Third Age Universities in Piedmont.

Seniores Online aims to be a social platform both in the real and virtual realms to meet the need for connection, knowledge, and information, promoting active aging in Piedmont. The project is funded through the funds allocated by the Piedmont Region for the implementation of interventions and initiatives related to the active aging plan.

The project arises from the belief that the Over 65 generation has been considered “lost” to digital for too long, while now it plays a central role in the contemporary “Silver Economy.” In Piedmont alone, there is a growing synergy among local entities that, by “working together,” strengthen their presence, proposals, and their ability to be a real and potentially virtual community.

Furthermore, the pandemic and its dramatic consequences on the elderly have demonstrated the indispensability of creating a virtual community, an online social network to connect those over 65, providing them with information and support even at a distance and in moments when traditional channels are not effective.

The goal of Seniores Online is to create a social platform both in the real and virtual realms to meet the needs for connection, knowledge, information, culture, and activities of those over 65 residing in a particular area. The Seniores Online community aims to become a factor in social innovation and a local actor, evolving into a knowledge community, an active community for change, and the construction of a uniquely rich social environment.

The morning’s program includes the presentation of the Seniores Online platform and its initiatives, as well as two debates on topics related to active aging and real and digital communities.

The Benefit Society Model for Generating Social Impact: A moment of reflection and discussion aimed at benefit societies and those aspiring to become one

“The Benefit Society Model for Generating Social Impact” is the title of the event conceived by Torino Social Impact in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce of Turin, Cottino Social Impact Campus, and in partnership with API Torino and Industrial Union Turin.

The meeting took place on the afternoon of Monday, November 27, hosted at the Cottino Social Impact Campus, creating a moment for reflection and discussion on the benefit model. The event marks the conclusion of the networking and training journey of the Community of Practice of benefit societies within Torino Social Impact, initiated at the request of participating Benefit Societies in the ecosystem and made possible with the support of the Chamber of Commerce of Turin and the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation.

Fifty participants, including Benefit Societies from the region and companies interested in embarking on this path, drew inspiration from the experiences already underway.

The event began with greetings from Guido Bolatto, Secretary General of the Chamber of Commerce of Turin. This was followed by the panel “Territorial Experiences in Comparison“, moderated by Grace De Girolamo, Communication Manager at Torino Social Impact. The panel featured Micol Burighel from Amapola, Emanuela De Sabato, a member of Futura Law Firm, Federica Fugiglando from FL20 Studio, and Andrea Toso from Synesthesia. On this occasion, the four organizations shared their journey of sharing and dialogue initiated in 2023 with the mission to exchange experiences and skills, uniting forces to multiply impacts on the territory.

Subsequently, Pierangelo Decisi, Coordinator of the benefit-ESG group at API Torino, and Marco Piccolo, Vice President of Small Industry at the Industrial Union of Turin with a focus on Sustainability, shared their experiences and knowledge in the world of Benefit Societies.

The panel “Being Benefit Societies Today: Scenarios, Profiles, and Competences” featured Nicoletta Alessi, Co-founder of Goodpoint SB and a member of the board of Assobenefit, and Caterina Soldi, Development & Program Manager at the Cottino Social Impact Campus.

Closing the event was the keynote speech by Mario Calderini, Spokesperson for Torino Social Impact and Professor at the School of Management, Politecnico di Milano.

Experts discussed the strengths and challenges of the Benefit Society model, emphasizing the importance, from a forward-looking perspective, of bringing value to the territory, not only economically but also generatively impactful.

A meeting with the Community of Practice on Circular Economy during the Circular Days

On Friday, November 24, 2023, the event “Circular Economy: the City at Stake” took place, organized by the City of Turin in collaboration with Turin Social Impact, the Chamber of Commerce of Turin, and Circular Market.

On this occasion, the citizens were introduced to two European projects, RESPONDET and SME4GREEN, aimed at developing two local action plans contributing to achieving the city’s climate neutrality goal by 2030. Over the past months, organizations from the Community of Practice on Circular Economy of Turin Social Impact have been involved through consultation meetings to identify the needs and challenges of the territory and contribute to the drafting of the two documents.

The event was part of the XV European Week for Waste Reduction and coincided with the Circular Days Festival by Green Pea, which, from November 24 to 26, offered workshops, experiences, and labs to promote circularity.

During the meeting, facilitated by Mercato Circolare, the over 40 participants engaged in a team-based game to explore key terms related to the presented project documents: circular economy, renewable energy communities, food, and packaging.

The evening also provided an opportunity to showcase businesses and organizations from the Torino Social Impact Community of Practice. These entities, serving as ambassadors for one of the “R”s of the circular economy, included: Liberitutti Cooperative with the “Ci2 – Circular Foods” project at Cascina Falchera; Triciclo Cooperative with the bike workshop and reuse center on Via Arbe; the startup Around, offering a vacuum packaging return service; Off Grid Italia with the ReuseGame project; Panacea Social Farm, a social bakery experimenting with new flours and ingredients for baking using food waste; the benefit corporation Mindful Morsel, studying how to enhance and transform excess fruits and vegetables into nutritious snacks; and finally, SIAVS Atelier Riforma, optimizing the selection of end-of-life clothing with the Re4Circular technology, directing them toward the most optimal circular strategy, including reuse, upcycling, and recycling.

The presentation of the two projects, SME4GREEN and RESPONDET, marks the beginning of a dialogue with the community on the issues addressed during the evening..

Attraction and Retention: Building a People Strategy in a Startup

Is there a formula to generate ‘value’ in the short and long term? How do you design and implement an HR strategy that attracts the best resources and retains them, considering the changing context and significant stress experienced in a startup?

In the company of some innovative young companies that have already addressed these issues, the meeting will offer an in-depth exploration of the challenges and opportunities in the field of human resources in a startup and will try to answer questions such as: what does it mean to be a functioning team? What role should a founder play? Are there assessments capable of predicting the functioning and success of a team?

The event is organized by I3P, the Incubator of the Polytechnic University of Turin, in collaboration with W Executive, a headhunting company specializing in Executive Search. The company includes two other brands: W Advisory, dedicated to consulting and organizational development, and WeHunt, dedicated to the search and selection of middle-senior management profiles.

Conducting the meeting will be Laura Cavallaro, Partner at W Advisory, and Simone Suppo, Senior Manager at WeHunt and founder of the Turin office, with the intervention of Andrea Ferrero, Founder and CEO of Young Platform, a startup born in I3P and specialized in the Crypto Fintech world.

Circular ideas – Rethinking (un)sustainable fashion

Circular Ideas – Rethinking (Un)Sustainable Fashion is an hackathon organized by Fondazione Giacomo Brodolini Srl SB as part of the Consolid8 Project – Consolidating Deep & Inclusive Social Innovation Ecosystems, funded by the European Commission. The goal of the hackathon is to support the integration of social innovation actors into innovation ecosystems in Europe, as well as the integration of traditional innovation ecosystems into emerging social innovation ecosystems. Created in collaboration with Greencome, the hackathon aims to challenge creative and passionate minds to develop innovative solutions to revolutionize the fashion industry in terms of sustainability. The event aims to inspire and catalyze new ideas that can guide the industry towards a more ecological direction, promoting the concept of a circular economy. It will take place on November 39, 2023, at 5:00 PM at Open Incet.

Objectives:

  1. Circular Innovation: Challenge participants to think beyond the traditional model of fashion production and consumption, promoting circular ideas that minimize environmental impacts and maximize reuse and recycling.

Get it! The value path for the growth of startups with social, environmental, and cultural impact

The second round of applications for the Third Edition of ‘Get it! – Value Path‘ is now open. The program, promoted by the Fondazione Social Venture Giordano Dell’Amore, Cariplo Factory, and Fondazione Cariplo, has been supporting entrepreneurial initiatives with high social, environmental, or cultural impact since 2018, providing capacity building tools and capital.

To date, Get it! has become a consolidated and inclusive intervention model supporting the Italian ecosystem of social innovation and impact investing. Throughout the first two editions and the ongoing third edition, it has deployed 4.5 million euros, conducted 16 ‘Call for Impact,’ received 1,356 applications, funded 108 empowerment initiatives nationwide, and invested over 1 million euros in 20 impact startups.

The first round of the Third Edition (2023/2024) concluded at the end of June with 90 applications. Get it! is now opening the second round, which will remain open until March 31, 2024.

Highlights of the Call For Impact for the Third Edition:

  • The best 6 ideas or startups applying to the program will have access to a tailor-made incubation/acceleration and mentorship program lasting 3+3 months nationwide.
  • They will benefit from a flat-rate reimbursement of 3,500 euros for participation expenses incurred by startups, aiming to facilitate access to incubation/acceleration and mentorship programs for all deserving initiatives facing economic difficulties.
  • Participation in an annual Investor Day allowing the 2 best startups selected by Get it! to receive investments of 80,000 and 50,000 euros respectively from FSVGDA. Part of the investment may be converted into an Impact Grant, transforming a portion into a non-refundable grant upon achieving pre-agreed social impact goals. Additional bonuses from FSVGDA and Third-Party Partners (e.g., seed investment, co-investments) will also be awarded.
  • Networking with investors, business angels, and professionals within the ecosystem of program-promoting partners, along with high visibility on communication channels of the Fondazione Social Venture Giordano Dell’Amore and Cariplo Factory.

Get it! continues to be a flagship program and a fundamental piece in the integrated approach to social innovation promoted by the Fondazione Social Venture Giordano Dell’Amore, in collaboration with Cariplo Factory and Fondazione Cariplo. Chamber of Deputies and Ecomondo: a November full of speeches for Atelier Riforma

At the beginning of November, the startup member of Turin Social Impact Atelier Riforma was the protagonist of two important speeches in the field of the Italian textile sector.

The first took place on 2 November, the day on which Rén collective organization – which since 2018 has been spreading good responsible fashion practices through research, dissemination, support for companies and dialogue with institutions – was summoned to the Chamber of Deputies to participate in a public hearing on the Made in Italy DDL, to express their comments regarding article 8 on textile raw materials.

By virtue of Atelier Riforma’s great research and innovation work in the field of circular fashion, Rén Collective involved the startup’s CEO, Elena Ferrero, to contribute to the work and to present it during the hearing.
The document that has been proposed is the result not only of everyone’s experience, but also of the dialogue that has taken place in recent years with the professionals and companies in the sector associated with Rén Collective. The actions proposed for the new DDL are aimed in particular at enhancing Italian circular skills, linked to textile reuse, repair, upcycling and recycling… i.e. all those practices that aim at a zero-waste fashion industry, which exploits neither the environment nor people.

The other important event for the startup took place on 8 November, on the occasion of Ecomondo, an international event for technologies, services and industrial solutions in the green and circular economy sectors.

During the event the startup spoke in two panels, both focused on the transition of the textile industry towards greater sustainability.

The CEO of the startup, Elena Ferrero – also on behalf of the Movimento Moda Responsible of which Atelier Riforma is part – was invited to moderate the panel organized by AEA Sustainable Textile, the Business Unit of Ancitel Energy and Environment focused on the Sustainable and Circular Textile sector , entitled “The Textile Revolution: Introduction to the Change and Instructions for Use”. The panel dealt with a hot topic: continuously evolving EU regulations, with initiatives such as ecodesign and extended producer responsibility, are driving the Italian textile industry towards greater sustainability, but will require a considerable commitment to modify and adapt the companies to the necessary change. What are the strategies of industrial districts and the proactive actions adopted by companies to face these challenges? The speakers of the panel moderated by Ferrero were: Filippo Bernocchi, President of Ancitel EA – AEA Sustainable Textile, Francesco Marini, Managing Director of Confindustria Toscana Nord, Nicola Ciolini, President of ALIA SERVICES AMBIENTALI SpA, and Andrea Betti, Sales Manager for the BEREDO® project by Beste.

The other panel in which the startup participated was organized by EconomiaCircolare.com and was entitled “Ecodesign, EPR, recycling, roadmap for a circular textile”. Together with Ferrero, there very important speakers such as: Francesca Romana Rinaldi (Director of Monitor for Circular Fashion), Roberta De Carolis (Researcher in ENEA), Luca Campadello (Strategic development & innovation manager Erion), Michele Zilla (General Director of Cobat Tessile Consortium), Mauro Chezzi (Deputy Director of Sistema Moda Italia and Retex.Green consortium), Erika Francescon (Co-founder of SustainME and Ecoesedra Sustainable Design partner). the fashion sector “already produces up to 100 billion clothes a year. (…) The British Fashion Council calculates that with the clothing, shoes and accessories at our disposal [to date] we could dress the next 6 generations. ( …) Some countries have already been active for some time, showing for example that an extended producer responsibility policy can increase collection and recycling rates. Obviously, however, the action must be ‘system-wide’ and the regulation must be supported by increasingly effective traceability and environmental performance measurement systems”.

These speeches are the reconfirmation of the very important role of this Turin startup in sustainable innovation in the textile-fashion industry.

Atelier Riforma startup inaugurates its partnership with Green Pea

Torino Social Impact member Atelier Riforma has just started parthership with the sustainability retail park Green Pea, with a large innovation project on circular fashion.

Green Pea is located in Turin and is a unique place in Italy: it is a shopping center – with 5 floors and 15,000 m2 – dedicated to 360° sustainability, in particular in the sectors of mobility, energy, furniture, beauty, leisure and clothing.

The Green Pea building is built in a circular perspective, recovering wood from the forests destroyed by the 2018 Vaia storm and is painted with Airlite, the paint that eliminates pollutants. It is powered by renewable energy (photovoltaic panels, mini wind turbines and even piezoelectric floors that produce energy thanks to people walking) and includes more than 2000 plants inside and on the terraces.

Thanks to Atelier Riforma’s great experience and research on circular fashion, the startup was involved in an ambitious project: to create in Green Pea the first large physical hub in Italy dedicated to circular fashion: from second-hand and vintage, to creative upcycling, to the use of deadstock fabrics, to products obtained from textile recycling, etc. The startup’s involvement came through Green Pea’s new CEO, Marco Piarulli, who believed in this collaboration from the beginning.

“Circularity in fashion is made up of many aspects: from the production, putting used colthes back into circulation, using recycled and deadstock textiles, upcycling discarded garments through tailoring; but it also involves educating consumers to take care of their garments and extend their life (repair, “homemade” upcycling); and goes as far as the responsible management of clothing at the end of their lifespan, directing them towards circular processes and “closing the loop” and avoiding waste. The startup also aims to make Green Pea’s fashion department an aggregator of virtuous practices and a physical showcase for all those brands that believe in responsible and circular fashion and do not exploit natural resources, but know – with competence and creativity – how to valorize “waste” as a resource.

We will start to see the fruits of this partnership in the next few days. For November 24-25-26, in fact, Green Pea has organized the “Circular Days“, a three-day festival dedicated to the circular economy, as an alternative to the classic compulsive buying of Black Friday. Atelier Riforma – together with the many other entities that collaborate with Green Pea – also organized many activities for this event, from a swap party, to talks, to upcycling workshops, to a practical display of how Re4Circular works, to a ” circular market” with second-hand and upcycling brands.

Guber Banca has acquired a minority stake in the social innovation startup B Corp benefit company ‘Homes4All.’

The Brescia-based bank, a rapidly growing challenger bank and leader in NPE (Non-Performing Exposures) and SME services, has announced a collaboration of significant social value, aligning with its values and ESG projects. The Board of Directors has given the green light for the acquisition of a minority stake in ‘Homes4All Srl innovative startup B Corp benefit society’ (‘H4A’).

Certified as a B Corp, H4A is a Benefit Company founded in 2019 in Turin with a mission to create new affordable and quality housing models, promoting sustainable balance between free access to a fundamental asset like a home and the profit of private investors. H4A aims to become a reference point in national social housing, an area where initiatives are currently fragmented, and to have a significant impact on the country socially, economically, and environmentally.

Following Guber’s efforts in support of the ‘Fondo Salva Casa,’ a project designed to provide an alternative financial plan for those at risk of losing their homes due to economic difficulties, the partnership with H4A signifies a further commitment to the issue of the housing emergency.

On November 7th, the presentation event of the research conducted by the MIRA Observatory took place, focusing on the socio-economic impact generated by the winning initiatives of the ‘Wonder’ grant

The event ‘The Design of Social Innovation: The Wonder Case,’ held on November 7th at the Circolo del Design, was a unique opportunity to relive the entire journey outlined by the ‘WONDER. Experiments in design for social innovation‘ grant. This initiative, promoted in 2020 by the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation, aimed to develop design projects capable of generating innovative solutions in response to the social needs of the territory, with a green perspective.

Throughout the morning, which saw the participation of representatives from all the entities involved in the initiative, the research ‘WONDER: Experiments in design for social innovation’ was presented, useful for defining the long-term socio-economic impact generated by each project.

The research, promoted by the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation and conducted by the MIRA Observatory of the Circolo del Design, was also aimed at identifying the policy implications of the experimentation for the Turin philanthropic foundation, as well as the impacts that the journey had on the participating organizations and the involved designers. Born within the framework of the ‘Create Attractiveness Mission‘ of the ‘Cultural Objective‘ and developed in collaboration with the Circolo del Design and Torino Social Impact, the Wonder Grant was addressed to designers and third sector entities to create projects useful for generating innovative solutions and services, with a high social impact, capable of responding to the challenges posed by the green transition.

The main objective was to bring together the world of the third sector with that of design, pursuing the dual purpose of empowering third-sector entities and opening up a new market for designers, on one hand, and generating a positive impact on territories and reference communities, on the other.

The Social Impact Exchange highlighted on the EU Social Economy Gateway portal

The social economy portal is a unique website that provides social economy entities with information on EU funding, training opportunities, events, country-specific information, and where to find additional resources as a tool for capacity development.

The idea of creating a website to gather relevant information for the social economy stemmed from consultations with various stakeholders during the development of the action plan for the social economy. The European Commission embraced this idea and integrated the social economy portal as one of the ten key actions of the plan.

The best practice of the Social Impact Exchange is now featured on the portal: a significant recognition of the value and originality of the experimentation developed within the strategic plan of Torino Social Impact.

The City of Turin, together with Turin Social Impact, the Turin Chamber of Commerce, and Circular Market, has organized the event titled “Circular Economy: The City at Play.” This event is part of the activities carried out by the European projects RESPONDET and SME4GREEN, involving organizations from the Community of Practice on the circular economy.

Held during the European Week for Waste Reduction 2023, the event will focus on finding innovative solutions that can redefine our way of thinking, producing, and consuming. It will include a group gaming session to explore the circular economy and the future of the city, experiencing the challenges of green Turin today and tomorrow.

The event is part of Green Pea’s Circular Days: a weekend to delve into the world of circularity through products, workshops, experiences, and labs.

Third Sector Organizations, starting from November 8, can submit applications to Invitalia for the energy contribution

The measure “Energy Contribution to Third Sector Registered Organizations” started on November 8, 2023, recognizing a non-repayable contribution of up to 30,000 euros for the increase in electricity and natural gas costs incurred in the first three quarters of 2022 compared to the same period in 2021.

The financial allocation is 98.5 million euros. The platform for submitting applications is managed by Invitalia.

The benefits are intended for organizations registered in the National Register of the Third Sector.

In more detail, the following can benefit from the contribution:

  • Organizations registered in the National Register of the Third Sector under Article 45 of Legislative Decree No. 117/2017.
  • Volunteer organizations (ODV) still involved in the transmigration process under Article 54 of Legislative Decree No. 117/2017.
  • Social promotion associations (APS) still involved in the transmigration process under Article 54 of Legislative Decree No. 117/2017.
  • Non-profit organizations of social utility (ONLUS) under Legislative Decree No. 460 of December 4, 1997, registered in the relevant registry.
  • Civilly recognized religious entities under Article 4, paragraph 3 of Legislative Decree No. 117/2017.

Inclusive Social Growth: A Discussion in Turin Thanks to the Annual Convention of the Microlab Association

The annual convention of the Business Mentors of the MicroLab Association took place on October 20th and 21st in Turin, at Serming. The meeting, always a moment of encounter and exchange of best practices among the voluntary mentors of the association, addressed the theme of inclusive growth, thanks also to exceptional guests.

In this setting of the Arsenal of Peace, we want to recall with pleasure the contribution made to society in these twenty years of activity of the MicroLab Association,” declares Andrea Garello Cantoni, President of the MicroLab Association. “By offering services to the most vulnerable groups to help them enter the world of work and self-employment, through guidance, training, and mentoring. Over these years, more than 500 voluntary business mentors have taken turns, we have trained over 8,000 people on starting a business and financial education, supported 2,000 with one-to-one mentoring paths to start their own business, and helped in the delicate phase of job orientation for 1,000 young people looking for their first job.

Daniele Frigeri, President of CeSpi, the Center for International Political Studies, was present at the convention. He has conducted analyses and research on the financial inclusion of foreign citizens for the past 10 years. He stated, “Financial inclusion, through all types of financial instruments available (credit, savings, investments, insurance, and the payment system), is an enabling factor for an individual to develop their projects over time, and thus becomes a fundamental piece of the socio-economic inclusion process in a society. In Italy, over 5 million citizens who were born abroad and have now chosen Italy live. Their condition as ‘immigrants’ puts them in a condition of multiple vulnerability; financial inclusion, understood not only as access but also as the effective use of financial instruments, can make a difference. Monitoring the financial inclusion process becomes fundamental to understanding needs and how they change over time, also following changes in external conditions (such as the pandemic or the crisis related to inflation), and accompanying this journey towards a mature financial profile.

Remotely connected, Lucia Bucciarelli Ducci, Country Manager CEB, Development Bank of the Council of Europe, the oldest multilateral financial institution after the World Bank, with the peculiarity of having social purposes, said, “Europe has faced and is facing a series of discouraging challenges: from COVID-19 to the ongoing climate emergency, to the Russian aggression in Ukraine, not to mention the impact of these crises on our economies. In this context, vulnerable people are the most affected, and the poor investments in social sectors further worsen the situation.

In 2022, the CEB member states approved the new Strategic Plan 2023-2027, which defines a series of ambitious objectives, also in response to these challenges, on three lines of action: Investing in people and enhancing human capital, Promoting inclusive and resilient living environments, and Supporting employment and economic and financial inclusion. Microfinance and support for the most vulnerable are at the center of these objectives, and the long-standing cooperation with MicroLab confirms this.

Also present was Juri Di Molfetta, President of the A Pieno Titolo Association Onlus, which since 2012 has been accompanying third-country citizens in the process of recognizing qualifications obtained abroad: “Foreigners residing in Italy are often pushed to take on much humbler job positions than they could aspire to, giving rise to a model of subaltern integration, in which the foreign citizen renounces in most cases to follow a path in line with their studies and their professional profile acquired abroad. The A Pieno Titolo ONLUS association therefore aims with its projects and orientation services in the territory to favor the integration of the foreign citizen in the world of work and in the territorial context, enhancing the curricula of study and professionals matured in foreign countries, favoring their formal recognition in Italy and making skills and professionalism, for now, little valued in the local economic system, usable.

During the convention, the business mentors of the association had the opportunity to discuss their mentoring experiences and devise new practices such as co-mentoring, to better support the beneficiaries of the association.

The Chamber of Commerce of Turin supports and promotes the local socio-economic system, also by providing contributions to initiatives for territorial promotion carried out by third parties.

The potential beneficiaries of the contributions are indicated in Article 1 of the current TECHNICAL REGULATIONS governing the disbursement of contributions (see page Contributions – Technical Regulations). Each request must be submitted in accordance with the current Multi-Year Strategic Plan of the Chamber of Commerce of Turin.

NEET: Second Workshop of the Community of Practice

On Friday, October 10, the second meeting of the community of practice focused on initiatives for young NEETs (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) took place, addressing young individuals not engaged in education, employment, or training.

The initiative is part of the broader Community of Practice project, realized with the support of the Chamber of Commerce of Turin and the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation.

The online meeting also featured Alessia Gianoncelli, Director of Knowledge and Programs at EVPA, the European network that brings together over 300 organizations dedicated to impact finance. The aim was to explore funding opportunities to support social impact projects carried out by organizations in Turin.

Following the first meeting, during which ecosystem organizations shared their mission, project progress, and initiatives related to the NEET phenomenon, the second meeting of the Community of Practice focused on two specific questions: “How are your initiatives in support of NEETs funded?” and “Do you think there is a need for more funding? If so, what characteristics should it have?”

A total of 13 organizations participated in the meeting. In addition to accessing resources, the discussion also delved into the magnitude of public and private calls for proposals, beneficiaries of activated projects, and the relationship between competition and collaboration within these calls. These topics facilitated a constructive exchange, allowing for the sharing of experiences, limitations, and possibilities.

Tuesday, November 21, a conference for non-profit organizations (ONLUS) called to decide on their future

The ONLUS organizations are called in the coming months to definitively decide what will become of their future. The reform of the Third Sector, by redefining the regulations that characterize all organizations operating in the non-profit world, has imposed some radical changes, including the elimination of the ONLUS qualification and the consequent repeal of the related legislation. What to do, then, to avoid disappearing altogether? How to adapt to this new and imminent scenario?

The conference, with the contribution of Third Sector experts and officials from the Piedmont Region, will try to clarify some themes: the advantages and disadvantages of registration in the RUNTS, and related timing; the transition from ONLUS to various types of ETS and the consequent classification of volunteers; the devolution of assets if the ONLUS decides not to transform into a Third Sector Entity; and the possible operational criticalities in the RUNTS registration.

Indeed, the reform of the Third Sector has provided for the creation of the qualification “Third Sector Entity” (ETS) to be applied to all non-profit entities that carry out activities of general interest, pursue civic, solidarity, and social utility purposes, and register with the RUNTS – National Unique Register of Third Sector Entities. As there is no automatic transformation, ONLUS must decide whether to become ETS and in which type they are most suitable to transform (voluntary organizations; associations for social promotion; social enterprises, including current social cooperatives; philanthropic entities; associative networks; mutual aid societies; other entities), or alternatively, they must devolve their assets and dissolve permanently.

ONLUS intending to enter the Third Sector and modify their type as provided by the Third Sector Code have until March 31 of the year following the obtaining of authorization from the European Commission regarding the new tax regime of the Third Sector: therefore, it will be in 2024 if this pronouncement occurs by the end of 2023. In Piedmont, the ONLUS registered with the Revenue Agency (data updated to October 5) that have not yet made the choice to qualify as ETS are still the vast majority (1725); the same trend is also seen for the Metropolitan City of Turin, with 1056 ONLUS still uncertain about what to do. ONLUS that have already chosen to become ETS are only 259 in Piedmont and 151 in Turin.

Communicating Disabilities: A Free Seminar in Biella to Explore the World of Disabilities and the Vocabulary to Express It

Language holds the power to reshape our perceptions of reality, influencing the positions individuals and social groups hold within it.

This is particularly true for individuals with disabilities, as they are often depicted as ‘children,’ eternally youthful; or as ‘superheroes,’ celebrated for their efforts to overcome barriers and limitations; or simply as ‘them,’ a homogeneous and distinct group set apart from ‘us.’

How do individuals with disabilities wish to be represented and portrayed today? What influence do social and cultural professionals, as well as communication professionals, have in either promoting or hindering narratives that either expand or diminish the space for recognizing the rights of people with disabilities?

‘Urban innovation ecosystems and European funds’: a talk by Torino Social Impact at Designing Europe

On 7 and 8 November, Designing Europe, the online event dedicated to the world of European design, takes place. Organised by Quality Culture, the edition hosts a total of 8 panels and 14 guests coming from the digital world, communication, Italian universities and national associations to provide advice, experiences and perspectives in the field of Eurodesign.

Torino Social Impact is among the guests of Designing Europe and on Tuesday 7 November took part in the panel ‘Urban innovation ecosystems and European funds: networking to strengthen territories‘.

The meeting opened with the greetings of Carmelo Galeano, member of Quality Culture, who presented Torino Social Impact and Fondazione Innovazione Urbana, two realities that share a mission: to promote participation in the territory through urban innovation ecosystems.

The panel was facilitated by Francesco Errani, Officer Regione Emilia-Romagna, who interfaced with speakers Marta Meloni, Eu Project manager of Fondazione Innovazione Urbana and Raffaella Scalisi, advisor of Torino Social Impact.

Marta Meloni, through her speech “Glances and horizons in the territories. Local synergies and complementarities from a European perspective”, she spoke about the experience of the Urban Innovation Foundation (FIU), as a multidisciplinary centre for research, development, co-production and communication of urban transformations at the service of the construction of the future imaginary of the city of Bologna.

Through the presentation of a number of projects launched in the area, she emphasised the importance of relating to European funds, and consequently to other European realities, in order to enrich the Foundation’s activities in a synergic manner. An opportunity, therefore, to put social and human capital at the centre of public choices, promoting relationships.

This was followed by Raffaella Scalisi’s speech, through the presentation of Torino Social Impact and the projects that promote learning, from a collaborative perspective, of the subjects that are part of the ecosystem. These included a special focus on the EU Projet Hub for Social Economy project, launched in collaboration with Weco Impresa Sociale thanks to the contribution of the Turin Chamber of Commerce and the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation, aimed at enhancing the ecosystem’s skills on Europlanning to seize the many opportunities opening up at EU level.

Googreen Biodiversity Market – November 2023

November brings winter, but this year, it adorns the Sambuy Garden with light and warmth, and, during the usual second Sunday of the month, the Googreen Biodiversity Market will once again be a backdrop for art, culture, and good practices.

On November 2nd, the “AZZURROGIALLO” Artist’s Light by Giorgio Griffa lit up the park and gazebo, where the blue and yellow of the luminous spirals recall Van Gogh’s “Starry Night,” as well as the colors of Ukraine, as a sign of fraternity.

On the same date, coinciding with Artissima, the installation by Iranian artist Bahar Heidarzade was inaugurated for the Art Site Fest project. It creates a path in the Sambuy Garden that highlights the roots of the trees through gold leaf and dye, inviting us to raise our gaze towards the branches, crossing them with colorful lines of connection and dialogue. The meaning of Heidarzade’s intervention arises from the need to forge a deeper connection between nature and culture, seeking, in the roots of our being, as in all living things, a precious resource that we too often fail to grasp.

Inspired by a similar spirit of respect, brotherhood, and sisterhood, the CLOveCHARD exhibition was inaugurated on November 6th. It features sculptural and poetic works dedicated to the homeless and will remain on display on the benches of the Sambuy Garden until November 15th.

Conceived by Raffaele Palma for CAUS Centro Arti Umoristiche e Satiriche in collaboration with 14 sculptors, an equal number of multidimensional, polymaterial works were created and placed on some of the benches in the garden. During the exhibition-event’s setup, a section dedicated to poetry with texts written by 22 poets and printed on leaflets is given to the public for free with the aim of raising awareness among the public and city authorities to provide concrete help and urgent assistance to those living on the streets, especially as the winter season is about to begin.

On Sunday, the 12th, we begin the day as usual with friends from Paranza del Geco and a free pizzica lesson in the garden (free event, reservation appreciated: La Paranza del Geco). We will also resume the activities of the PHILOSOPHICAL BENCH, which, in conjunction with the “CLOveCHARD” exhibition-event, will have philosophers from FILOSOFIA IN atTO offering a dialogic stroll among the voices, silences, and thoughts that the contemplation of Bahar Heydarzade’s sculptures and pictorial interventions will evoke.

Starting from the “philosophical bench” at the center of the park, at 12:00 and 4:00 PM, the walks with philosophers and poets will lead participants to shared reflections, reasoning, and new resolutions. (Free event, reservation appreciated: info@filosofiainatto.it)

Terra&Tech. The first innovation program for the viticulture of tomorrow

The association “Filiera Futura” in collaboration with the Politecnico di Torino’s Incubator I3P, is launching the national initiative “Terra&Tech,” the first open innovation program for the viticulture of tomorrow.

The goal of this initiative is to identify the needs within the world of winemaking by engaging directly with the main actors in the sector: the producers and wineries. Once the critical issues and needs expressed by the industry’s key players have been gathered, a call for startups will be launched, crucial for involving innovative entrepreneurial entities capable of implementing solutions tailored to the identified needs.

Enterprises indeed play an increasingly crucial role on a national level, especially in relation to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and European policies. A traditional and deeply-rooted sector, such as the wine industry in Italy, can only benefit from the innovation introduced by startups and SMEs that develop advanced technological solutions for the entire sector’s competitiveness.

It is essential to promote the modernization and digitalization of agriculture and the wine startups that are embracing this challenge. Emerging technologies like the Internet of Things and data analytics allow for more efficient vineyard management, reducing environmental impacts. Moreover, they enhance product traceability, further strengthening the reputation of Italian wine. The hope of this presentation is to initiate new innovation processes to be carried out in collaboration with and in the regions, positioning and consolidating the value and quality of the Italian wine supply chain globally.

“Why is it that in just a few milliseconds, we can tell whether an environment attracts us or repels us?

Our bodies, long before our minds, process the data that perception gathers. It is the body’s memory, in other words, emotions, that summarizes this in the blink of an eye. Not understanding these processes can compromise the outcome of the project, provided that the well-being of people is at the heart of the interest.

What impact can an environment that does not meet our emotional expectations have on physical and mental health? What does it mean to make our experiences meaningful through a space of quality?

At the Fabermeeting on November 17-18, digital creativity creates job opportunities and reflects upon itself

For 15 years, the Fabermeeting in Turin has been bringing together young digital creatives from all over Italy and companies in the sector. Through co-designing content, it explores all possibilities for collaboration, which often turn into employment, as well as addressing the new social and cultural needs anticipated by this particular sector.

Giving a voice to companies and young individuals who make things happen, as its name suggests, the Fabermeeting has anticipated many of the themes that have become mainstream in recent years: from machine learning to web 2.0, from mobility technologies to blockchain, from crowdfunding to making, and from virtual reality to gaming.

This year, 50 young individuals under 35 from all over Italy will participate in the Fabermeeting, having developed 35 works selected by 60 partner companies through a call that closed last July.

The program, co-designed with partners over 9 months, includes 16 closed-door workshops, 6 working groups, 6 talks, and is rich in moments open to the public, including the presentation of winning works and a Keynote speech by Matteo Rostagno, one of Italy’s most important creative directors in Extended Realities (XR), a term referring to all combined real and virtual environments and human-machine interactions generated by information technology. Two discussions: “Designing for the Silver Wave: the potential of the Silver Economy on the UX of the future“, bringing together major national players on inclusive design, and “City in Transition: the empowerment of creative communities and their Social Impact“, addressing the social impact of the so-called “creative class,” featuring experiences such as Turin Stratosferica and Graphic Days, with Paolo Venturi, Stefano Mirti, and Fabrizio Ghisio.

However, the themes proposed by Fabermeeting partner companies, which this year officially opened up to third-sector companies interested in creativity and innovation, are many. In the workshops, there is innovative and generative marketing proposed in various ways by Zandegù, Merakyn, and So Simple; there’s data to be interpreted with Top-IX and told with Bianco Tangerine, but also a new way of designing with Domino, Francesco Bombardi, and Fablab Turin; the new variations of AI with Eggers and Valentino Megali, and game thinking by Synestesia, as well as the productive experience of a successful series, such as that of Zero Calcare, told by those behind the scenes.

At the working tables, the world of digital creativity looks in the mirror without reservation, addressing challenging topics such as gender issues, work organization, and forms of precariousness. Above all, it aims to emancipate itself from the image of a para-artistic bohème, which has become a symbol of the new “knowledge work” and, as such, itself generates new social needs, attempting to address these through discussions on social innovation and impact.

InnoSocialMetro – Call for micro and small enterprises with a social innovation project

As part of the initiative InnoSocialMetro, the Metropolitan City of Turin has launched a call for micro and small enterprises with social innovation projects in need of financial suport.

The measure InnoSocialMetro, a combination of training and financial support, aims to increase the ability of the local entrepreneurial ecosystem to generate through its for profit activity, socially desirable impacts.

The Call, with availbe resources of around 1.200.000 €, will provides two independent forms of financial support:

  • an interest subsidy, in the face of a bank loan subscribed by the enterprise to finance the project,
  • a grant, to repay 50% of the amount invested by the enterprise in the project.

The beneficiaries will be micro and small enterprises of the Turin metropolitan area that, after having completed the training, will be able to present and implement a project with a definable and measurable social impact.

The micro and small enterprises interested in the program must contact one of the trainer providers selected by the Metropolitan City, whose list can be found at the following link.

The Metropolitan City chose wide social challenges that it wants to target, in order to encourage the evolution toward a more resilient, sustainable and fair economic model. That’s why the projects that will be admitted to the financing scheme will have to have positive repercussions on the commuity, relating in particular to one of the following challenges:

  1. Employment preservation an job creation, especially through the inclusion of vulnerable individuals and disadvantaged groups;
  2. Environment protection, improvement of the environmental sustainability of business activities, particularly through decarbonization, reuse and use of recycled materials, products and by-products from production cycles as an alternative to virgin raw materials, reduction of waste production, ecodesign, reduction of plastic use and replacement of plastics with alternative materials, support for green and digital transition processes;
  3. Urban regeneration, restoration of facilities, promotion of new local economies;
  4. Sustainable tourism, preservation and enhancement of historical and cultural heritage, trades and local productions;
  5. Well-being and quality of life of communities, improved access to public services including through digital tools.

Metropolitan Strategic Plan 2024-2026: Listening Event

The Metropolitan City of Turin invites the entire community to participate in the public listening event for the purpose of the participatory process aimed at defining the new Metropolitan Strategic Plan (MSP) 2024-2026.

The objective of the event is to initiate collective reflection to define a shared framework of the current state of affairs and the needs that the new planning must address. In particular, the event aims to begin with a discussion of what has been achieved with the MSP 21-23 and subsequently reflect on the new needs that the upcoming planning should address.

As the Guidelines for the 2024-2026 planning document, approved by the Metropolitan Council, confirm the overall structure of the current Plan, the event will be structured by dividing the audience into six thematic tables related to the Strategic Axes of the MSP: Axis 1 (Digitalization, Innovation, Competitiveness, and Culture), Axis 2 (Green Revolution and Ecological Transition), Axis 3 (Sustainable Mobility), Axis 4 (Education and Research), Axis 5 (Inclusion and Cohesion, Attractiveness), Axis 6 (Health). The discussion sessions will be facilitated by experts who will report the results of the discussions to the plenary session.

Dora Nera – Noir Festival

Autumn has arrived, and the city is shrouded in a distinctly noir atmosphere as the mist makes its appearance – the perfect setting for the return of Dora Nera, the city of Turin’s Festival of Noir, Mystery, and Crime.

For three days, from November 10th to the 12th, there will be roundtable discussions, readings, musical performances, and film screenings. All of this will take place in the baroque and spectacular setting of the Oratorio San Filippo Neri, just a stone’s throw from the Egyptian Museum.

The festival’s program is, as always, very diverse: many guests, debates, screenings, and presentation moments, spanning from literature to art, from music to comics.

Among the numerous events, there is the meeting with a great Italian film director, Enzo Castellari, and the screening of “La polizia incrimina, la legge assolve” fifty years after its release.

This year, there will be a suspense-focused lecture by the renowned Davide Longo, sponsored by the Astra Onoranze Funebri Cooperative, because “We love suspense, but we know how it ends…“.

During the Career Award presentation to Carlo Lucarelli, sponsored by Aurora Penne, you can watch the film “Lupo Mannaro” (2000) in the presence of Carlo Lucarelli and Gigio Alberti. You can also toast with Italian noir writers while tasting cocktails offered by Zoppi Distillery.

Once again, music will take the spotlight on Saturday evening of the Festival with “Black Is Black” Pop narration by Maurizio Blatto, with music by Valeria Sturba. The “dark” songs that take on a noir quality in terms of lyrics and anecdotes. Management and Disability: Perspectives and Future Scenarios

Buy Social: First Training to Strengthen the Presence of Social Enterprises in the Market

On Thursday, September 26, the first training event titled “Social Enterprise: How to Strengthen Market Presence” was held at the Beeozanam Community Hub, as part of the Buy Social for the Social Economy project.

The European project Buy Social was launched in May 2023 with the mission of enhancing commercial collaborations between social enterprises and traditional businesses to improve the market for products and services of social enterprises.

The first training was aimed at 10 partner organizations of Torino Social Impact, with a total of 21 participants, including social enterprises and social cooperatives (according to the definition of the European Commission), as well as start-ups and benefit corporations with a social mission/impact, engaged in the circular economy with experiences related to textile recycling, fashion, or eco-design.

After the greetings from Torino Social Impact and the Consorzio Nazionale CGM, the morning began with a presentation by Daniele Consoletti, an expert in contracts, privacy, and compliance, focused on “Contractual Matters for Social Enterprises and Cooperatives.” Subsequently, Alberto Baccari delved into the topic “Market Approach Strategy,” drawing on his decades of experience as an entrepreneur and an expert in sustainable innovation, business design, and digital transformation.

In the afternoon, the presentation “Effective Communication: A Brief Guide” followed, delivered by experts Alberto Marzetta and Micol Burighel from Amapola Srl Società Benefit, a communication agency specializing in corporate social responsibility, institutional and environmental communication.

Finally, Laura Gallo shared the experience of Coffeefrom, an innovative start-up with a social vocation (SIAVS) that transforms used coffee grounds from the food industry, promoting the circular economy and creating social impact.

Thanks to the presence of industry experts, the event provided participants with tools and skills to strengthen their competitiveness and presence in the B2B market.

Voci column by Amapola: Foreign Entrepreneurship in Italy

In the fourth episode of “VOCI,” Amapola delves into the continuously growing phenomenon of foreign entrepreneurship in Italy, giving voice to an immigration story from Syria. Raiaan Dobosh, a Syrian restaurateur in Turin, and Anna Bertrand, the president of the Paìs Association, share their experiences with the S.T.A.R.C.I. project, highlighting the challenges and satisfactions.

An Interview in Two Voices

Raiaan Dobosh is a woman of Syrian origin who sought refuge in Italy in 2018. In 2022, thanks to the S.T.A.R.C.I. project, she and her family opened the Italo-Syrian restaurant, Eria-Cinque Petali, in Turin.

The Paìs Association – Pathways for Accompaniment and Social Inclusion has been working on projects since 2019 aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of individuals at risk of social marginalization in the city of Turin. The S.T.A.R.C.I. project, discussed in this interview, was funded by the Municipality of Turin and aims to provide support, including financial assistance, for the establishment of entrepreneurial activities by people of foreign origin within the city.

The stories shared by Anna and Raiaan shed light on the strength of the associative network in Turin, the motivation and enthusiasm of those determined to build a new life, but also the obstacles imposed by the banking system, among others, on projects that effectively enrich and innovate the landscape of commercial activities in our region.

DG Employment opens an important survey on social economy: deadline is October 30th

The DG Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion of the European Commission has commissioned a Study on State aid for access to finance for social enterprises and the recruitment of disadvantaged workers in the form of wage subsidies. The purpose of the study is to assess to what extend the current State aid rules as set by the GBER (General Block Exemption Regulation) facilitate access to finance for social enterprises. The second objective of the study is to assess the same in respect to the recruitment of disadvantaged workers.

Surveys is anonymous, complete it should not take longer than 30 minutes.
Deadline for the EC is October 30th.

GROW AI accelerator: call for startups and social enterprises – applications open until December 8th

Social Tides, a European incubator and accelerator for social entrepreneurship managed by INCO with the support of Google.org, announces the opening of the call for applications for the Grow AI accelerator.

GROW AI offers a 6-month equity-free program aimed at startups and social enterprises that utilize Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for social or environmental impact. The program aims to provide a valuable opportunity to scale one’s impact and, for the selected startups, it includes:

  • Training and mentoring from AI experts at Google For Startups Accelerator and other industry leaders in the INCO network
  • Networking and visibility opportunities
  • Access to a grant of up to $250,000

Learning economics by playing with the “Includimi a Scuola” project

Experian, the Microlab Association, and FEduF (ABI) launch “Include Me at School,” a financial education project aimed at high schools to promote independence and economic inclusion.
800 students from Piedmont, Lombardy, Lazio, Campania, and Puglia are engaged in a multidisciplinary and interactive journey based on gamification.
At the heart of this joint effort is the achievement of various UN sustainability goals related to economic growth, quality education, and reducing inequalities.

Experian, the world’s leading global information company, in collaboration with the Microlab Association and FEduF (ABI), announces the launch of the “Includimi a Scuola” project aimed at educating Italian students on financial literacy, with the goal of promoting financial inclusion and economic independence among the youth.

The dissemination of financial education in classrooms is entrusted, from a multidisciplinary perspective, to teachers from different subjects, and to encourage the contribution of all teachers, the “Includimi a Scuola” project presents itself as an interdisciplinary program that integrates financial education into even the most traditional curriculum subjects.

The “Includimi a Scuola” project, carried out within Experian’s United for Financial Health program, offers a range of tools that enable students to acquire the necessary skills to interact consciously with the economic system. Through the use of digital platforms, the support of experts, and gamification methodologies, 800 high school students from five regions – Piedmont, Lombardy, Lazio, Campania, and Puglia – will be guided through a comprehensive financial literacy journey. This journey covers everything from understanding technical terms like IBAN, interest rates, and inflation to using banking and financial tools to support their personal goals.

Engaging students is essential to ensure that the topics presented are not perceived as distant from their life experiences and can be easily understood. Thanks to a financial entertainment approach aimed at minimizing the limitations of more traditional financial education through engaging and interactive training methods, Experian, the Microlab Association, and FEduF offer the economic game “Embark on Your Journey”. This game challenges students to manage an annual budget with the goal of saving €5,000 to spend Christmas in New York. Designed for students in their final years of high school, “Embark on Your Journey” offers a cash prize of €500 to students who rank in the top three in the special competition for the most meritorious.

Through “Includimi a Scuola”, students can access a financial video glossary designed to explain complex financial terms in simple language, created by Experian experts and business mentors from the Microlab Association.

Finally, Experian, the Microlab Association, and FEduF (ABI) have provided support tools for teachers, starting with the digital meeting “Gamification at School for Financial Education: the “Includimi a Scuola” project“, which will take place on Wednesday, October 25th, to facilitate optimal understanding and integration of the project into the normal curriculum.

The “Includimi a Scuola” project contributes to achieving several UN Sustainable Development Goals related to the spread of well-being through quality education (Goal #4), sustainable economic growth (Goal #8), and reduction of inequalities (Goal #10).

The 2023 DIFFUSISSIMA® opens at Green Pea with an opening event on Sunday, October 22nd, at 6 PM, featuring Nina Zilli, Alvin, and Raptuz. Their exhibition, “MIRACOLO A MILANO,” explores Milan as a crossroads of stories and people, representing the city of dreams, actions, and possibilities. The event will take place at The Place within Green Pea. Attendees will have the opportunity to pick up DIFFUSISSIMA® maps, meet the artists and organizers, and enjoy an aperitif provided by the Consorzio Tutela Roero and the Consorzio per la Tutela del Formaggio Gorgonzola, Galup, and La Perla di Torino.

DIFFUSISSIMA FOR URBAN REGENERATION: AT SCALO VALLINO, A REFLECTION ON POST-HUMANITY

What do we want to be? How could we imagine ourselves?

DIFFUSISSIMA® addresses urban revitalization through an exhibition at Scalo Vallino, titled “Post-Umano l’Ulteriorità,” from October 22nd to November 15th. This exhibition, curated by Simone Sensi, explores humanity’s unexpected evolution, as humanity enters a new era of consciousness.

Post-Umano and its Ulteriorità represent an egalitarian shift, connecting humanity with the animal, plant, mineral, extraterrestrial, and technological worlds. This re-animalization is seen as a form of transition art, a focus on the future of Scalo Vallino through the exhibition titled “Post-Umano l’Ulteriorità.”

The exhibition features renowned artists, including Lawrence Malstaf, Federico Clapis, Matteo Lucca, MiTch Lurenzana, Francesco Niccoli, and Martina Fontana. Their works provide insights into their interpretations of Ulteriorità.

Federico Clapis, the main artist of the event, offers a digital and dystopian vision of post-humanism, focusing on technology as a core element. His work is a deep inner journey, exploring the intimate conditions of the human soul.

Matteo Lucca, an established sculptor, explores life and matter, ideas and dreams, the organic and inorganic, the present and the past, the unconscious and ancestral, reality and artifice, myth and mystery, leaving a sense of abstraction.

MiTch Lurenzana, a phygital artist, presents his Ulteriorità through artificial intelligence, creating (in)HUMAN entities that blend in with humans, taking on human forms.

Francesco Niccoli‘s Ulteriorità is a fusion of elements, blending human and plant forms into a primordial liquid, with esoteric symbols evoking fragility and uniqueness.

Martina Fontana, a multidisciplinary artist, immerses humanity in an animal dimension, transforming life into a ceremony filled with emotions and relationships, dismantling the boundaries of the physical and mental worlds.

Scalo Vallino, a historic building dating back to the late 1800s, has been the subject of vandalism and neglect over the years. For the first time, DIFFUSISSIMA® extends to Rocca di Arignano, a virtuous example of archaeological recovery located on the outskirts of Turin and bordering the Monferrato area. The exhibition features the personal work of entrepreneur and influencer Maurizio Rosazza Prin, titled “Cioccolato delle Meraviglie.”

The vernissage for the “Cioccolato delle Meraviglie” exhibition will officially open CioccolaTò on the evening of October 26th, during an inauguration cocktail event hosted at the Principi Adv communications agency on Via Antonio Banfo. The exhibition is part of the Cioccolatissima OFF format and will showcase selected works from the creative contest for emerging artists organized by Artàporter, dedicated to the art of chocolate. The ten selected artists will be hosted in ten locations in Barriera di Milano and will be featured at the closing party of CioccolaTò at Edit Torino.

Lastly, for the first time, artist and presenter Alvin will create a commissioned work that will be presented at a special event in Puff Store at Via Lagrange 21 in Turin.

A Green Deal and an Action Plan for the climate neutrality of the City of Turin

On October 10th, at the Sala Colonne of Turin’s City Hall, the first Local Green Deal was signed with the goal of implementing a sustainable and circular food system in the city. On this occasion, an Action Plan was also presented, designed to guide third-sector organizations through a ‘green’ transition process and provide them with the tools to move in the direction of this change.

The agreement was signed by Chiara Foglietta, the Assessor for Ecological Transition, Giacomo Portas, the President of Environment Park, Guido Cerrato, a manager from the Turin Chamber of Commerce representing President Dario Gallina, and representatives from small and medium-sized enterprises and startups. They contributed to the creation of these two documents as part of the twin projects SME4 GREEN and RESPONDET, funded by the European COSME program. These documents, along with other initiatives and tools, including their strategic commitments, actions, and planned investments, will be included in the Climate City Contract.

Torino Social Impact also collaborated by providing a wide ecosystem for preliminary consultation in the drafting of these documents. Both the Local Green Deal and the Local Action Plan will be incorporated into the Climate City Contract, the document that will guide Turin towards climate neutrality by 2030.

Sustainability is participation. The action of a company  based on sustainability criteria also relies on stakeholder engagement, in order to reduce distances and achieve its ESG – environmental, social and governance- objectives through involvement. October in the 8 Districts

The City of Turin is defining its new City Masterplan, one of the main tools to govern the spatial transformation of the municipal territory. It works on the physical dimension of the city, but can contribute to rethinking the future Torino in many other aspects: greenery, mobility, economic development, citizen services, housing policies, social and welfare policies.

Preparing, approving and adopting it is a long-term process that has to comply with regional legislation, its timing, procedures and constraints. As for now, the preparation of the City Masterplan is in its second phase, which will lead to the drafting of the Preliminary Project.
A legal tool, and a bureaucratic process, the Plan concerns the entire community: for this reason, it is important that the content, objectives and tasks that the Plan foresees are shared with those who live in Torino, use it and take care of it.

For these reasons, starting from June 2023, Urban Lab and the City of Torino have promoted a set of initiatives to listen to the territory. Through meetings, workshops, presentations, activities in the districts, and moments of discussion in neighboring municipalities, we are imagining what the city of tomorrow will be like.

October in the 8 Districts

From 20 to 22 October the engagement process stops by the 8 City Districts: participating is an important opportunity for citizens, communities, stakeholders and organizations to have a say about Torino’s future. No particular expertise in urban planning is required: what is needed instead is the desire and willingness to listen and discuss.

How to participate

  • filling out the online survey dedicated to anyone who lives, studies or works in Turin;
  • joining one of the public events in the 8 Districts;
  • visiting one of the 8 information points, to receive information regarding ongoing initiatives, to know about the next steps of the engagement activities, to ask questions and offer comments, critiques and proposals.

Jointly with the outcomes of the previous (and following) phase of the engagement process, all observations and suggestions collected during the “Districts days” will feed the development of the preliminary draft Plan.

FIORILE | Orti&Fiori in mostra – Autumn 2023

On the 28th and 29th of October 2023, Giardino Forbito returns to the Rose Garden of the Royal Castle of Moncalieri for “FIORILE | Orti&Fiori in mostra – Autumn 2023”.

A careful selection of specialized nurseries, agricultural producers, artisans, and designers will bring the Rose Garden of the Royal Castle of Moncalieri to life, telling the story of the seasonality and excellence.

As every year, the charming porticoes of the Rose Garden will host the “Giardino d’Inverno”, with an exhibition of sustainable craftsmanship, manual skills, and creativity, and the “Angolo dei Saperi e dei Sapori”,  with immersive experiences in the worlds of design, art, taste, and food awareness.

PRODUCERS

Local producers and nurseries, selected for seasonality and excellence, will narrate autumn and the changing of the seasons in all its splendor, with a contextualized program that pays attention to art, history, traditions, nature, literature, and biodiversity, starting from the local area and its heritage.

LOCAL VITAL

Following the thread of the continuous rediscovery of the Moncalieri spirit, a place of honor will be given to the typical production of these lands, the saffron, the golden flower. A plant of ancient beauty, it plays different roles around the world. While in Italy, it represents a tribute to death, in the East, it celebrates love and life. With Ana Cristina Vargas, scientific director of the Ariodante Fabretti Foundation and an anthropologist, we will delve into the concept of death, the cycle of life, and its end in relation to nature. Surrounded by the scenery of dried summer flowers created by the skilled hands of florist Marzia Gullino, we will discover together that learning to die is learning to live.

WINE TASTING

On this occasion and in collaboration with Vendemmia a Torino – Grapes in Town, we will explore Piedmontese wine through its territory and winemaking excellence with special insights into the wine world, including meetings and masterclasses dedicated to tastings and sensory experiences.

LABORATORY

In the backdrop of ecosystems and biodiversity, the educational corner, as always curated by the Metropolitan Pollinators and Beesù, will represent the marvelous and essential world of bees. Delving into the positive and negative aspects of these precious insects. The space, as always dedicated entirely to education, will host an experiential meeting with Fulvio Piccinino, the well-known Vermouth ambassador, who, in his role as the author of the book “Il re era una regina – storia, biologia e curiosità sulle api” (The king was a queen – history, biology, and curiosities about bees), published by Graphot editions, will lead a multisensory workshop. An experience that will allow you to look at a spoonful of honey with different eyes.

SAVORY OF ALIMENTATION

In the company of chef Marco Massaia from the Radici Mura Mura restaurant in Costigliole d’Asti and the critic and writer Luca Iaccarino, we will revisit excerpts from an old, now out-of-print book: “Frattaglie” – a journey of culinary and biographical memories by the late Egi Volterrani. This exploration will reveal the profound respect found in the recovery, particularly in the culinary world, and the ethical approach to the enhancement of every part, whether animal or vegetable. From humble foods to planet-saving menus.

LITERATURE

The time dedicated to reading also welcomes the publishing house Neos this year, with a book that perfectly fits into a program dedicated to the environment and the territory. In the company of the curator Riccardo Marchina and the author Franca Rizzi Martini, the collection of stories “Di Castello in Castello” will be presented.

TOUR GUIDE

In collaboration with the management of Moncalieri Castle, the rooms dedicated to the exhibition “Oltre il ventaglio. Haiku e Haiga” will be exceptionally open in the evening on Saturday, October 28th, accompanied by the cultural association AregoladArte. The visit will conclude with a tasting by Vendemmia a Torino – Grapes in Town.

ART SPACE

To delve once again into the profound connection between the human and plant spheres, the art space will host the works of Maura Banfo this time. With evocative polaroid photos featuring a floral theme, she will exhibit the works from her latest project. This represents the perfect synthesis of a Turin-based artist deeply immersed in life and profession, centered around the concepts of care, environment, and ecology.

In collaboration with Moncalieri Jazz 2023, the music returns this year as well with the spectacular “Duo Cora/Picchioni,” featuring the vocals of Carola Cora and Marcello Picchioni on the piano.

Within the BUYSOCIAL program of the Torino Social Impact Master Plan, a new European project, Buy Social Future for the Social Economy!, has been underway since May 2023. Drimlab at Milan Digital Week 2023 | “Smart Social City: the future in the present”

This year Drimlab will have the pleasure of participating in Milano Digital Week, an event held from October 6 to 9, 2023, which proposes as its theme “The Development of Limits, for an inclusive, sustainable and ethical digital transition and technological innovation.”

We will participate by proposing a digital experience entitled “Smart Social City: the future in the present“, which consists of an interactive and immersive journey within the virtual representation of a smart social city, that is, a city of the future, to which we have given the name Drimcity, made smart and innovative from a social as well as a technological point of view.

The experience takes place on Spatial.io, the platform we used to build this simulated environment, and involves both free and autonomous navigation in the space at any time of the day and participation in some predetermined panels. In the latter, we will have the opportunity to discuss the role of a social dimension within a smart city, by having guest speakers with different professional backgrounds who will contribute according to their own perspective and sensitivity on the topic.

“With the start of the school year, as tradition dictates, we are inaugurating the 2023-2024 edition of ‘Growing in the City,’ the catalog of educational and training offerings from the City of Turin and ITER. ‘Growing in the City’ has been a cornerstone for Turin’s schools, as well as associations, universities, public and private entities, non-profit organizations, museums, and cultural institutions for decades. This year, it offers approximately 1300 activities (over 300 more than last year) catering to all age groups, from 0 years to adulthood. The ‘Growing in the City’ catalog is a collection of educational and training activities presented by the City of Turin and ITER at the beginning of each school year, targeting children, teenagers, adults, and students of all levels.”

FREE WORKSHOPS OPEN TO PRIMARY SCHOOLS

The AL CICAPUI ASD and APS association has been selected through a call for proposals by the Metropolitan City of Turin to present their laboratory activities within the multi-year project “Growing in the City.”

AL CICAPUI has submitted three types of co-designed and collaborative projects with the Creative Reuse Center Remida, located at Via Modena 35 in Turin, which specializes in repurposing and recycling end-of-life products. The projects offered by the association involve providing various categories with cost-free activities.

APPLIED ART AND HANDLING OF NOBLE REUSED MATERIALS – SUSTAINABLE CIRCULARITY LABORATORIES

Targeted audience: Primary schools, suitable for individuals with mild sensory/cognitive and motor disabilities. Objectives include integration, socialization, communication, sharing, learning through fun, and stimulating creativity as an emotional and expressive outlet through the creation of artistic artifacts. It also aims to practice manual skills by refining basic abilities.

WORKSHOPS OPEN TO FAMILIES, ADULTS, AND THE PUBLIC

Glass art course with a circular economy perspective – Glass re-creation for families and the public (workshop aimed at adults) not suitable for individuals with disabilities.
The innovative aspect of the proposal lies in approaching a traditional and specific art form like glass art, decontextualizing it, and transposing it onto repurposed materials to offer new expressive languages and new forms of working with glass materials from a sustainability and circular economy standpoint. This not only guarantees an immersive laboratory experience but also serves as a starting point for environmental education and creative use of processing waste.

Thanks to the collaboration network and the opportunity provided by the Metropolitan City of Turin, these workshops can be activated in the November-May 2023-2024 period.

WORKSHOPS FOR TEACHERS AND STUDENTS – EDUCATIONAL SERVICE CENTER (CE.SE.DI)

In addition to this opportunity, the association has been selected through a call for proposals to appear in the Regional School Catalog managed by the EDUCATIONAL SERVICE CENTER (CE.SE.DI.). This catalog offers various training opportunities for teachers and students to complement both curricular and extracurricular education, as well as tools for educational design and support services for educational autonomy. The catalog includes activities with no cost for teachers and others that require a reduced participation fee from participants. In some cases, course fees may also be paid through teacher cards.

All teacher training courses in the catalog are recognized for in-service training for school personnel, as the CE.Se.Di. was accredited by the Ministry of Education in 2020 in accordance with Directive 170/2016.

CUAP Social Impact Finance – 1st Edition

SOCIAL IMPACT FINANCE: AN INEVITABLE PARADIGM FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

In the new economic landscape, social impact finance emerges as an essential driver alongside the funds from the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) to respond to the increasingly stringent demands for social and environmental sustainability set by the European Union. This growing need has led the “Valter Cantino” Department of Management at the University of Turin to launch the first edition of the CUAP (University Course for Professional Updating) in “Social Impact Finance.” This initiative was conceived in collaboration with the Turin Chamber of Commerce and the Center of Competence for Social Impact Assessment within the framework of Turin Social Impact, involving 37 new enrollees.

In the current economic landscape, understanding the dynamics of social impact finance is not just a competitive advantage but a necessity. In response to new funding programs from supranational institutions like the European Union, which aim to increase financing in the social and environmental sectors and leverage funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), numerous organizations are introducing specific tools oriented towards both profit and socio-environmental impact. This theme engages the “Valter Cantino” Department of Management at the University of Turin through the first edition of the University Course for Professional Updating (CUAP) in “Social Impact Finance” [1].

Supported by the Turin Chamber of Commerce and offered within Turin Social Impact, this educational journey will take place from October 9, 2023, to November 27, 2023. Thirty-seven selected participants from public, private, and third-sector companies (e.g., Centrali Cooperative) will be trained in the specific use of social impact finance tools (e.g., green bonds, social bonds), new markets and operators (e.g., social stock exchange), and reporting methods (e.g., social balance sheet, sustainability report…).

The CUAP program will blend theoretical and practical approaches in identifying strategies for social impact investment (i.e., impact investing). The teaching will be conducted online and synchronous on Monday afternoons starting at 2:00 PM. In addition to traditional lectures, the learning journey will be completed with a final project work to facilitate comprehensive knowledge sharing among the participants themselves.

What does it mean to enter the era of social impact finance? “It means preparing not only for a new economic paradigm but also a key factor in building a more sustainable future. Social impact finance goes beyond mere financial returns,” explains Professor Paolo Biancone, “it constitutes a set of tools aimed at generating tangible benefits for society, actively involving investors in achieving both financial returns and a positive impact on communities and the environment. This requires study and a change of mindset, both on the part of companies and capital providers.”

What are the premises that led to the creation of the CUAP in social impact finance? “Turin has always been a vibrant hub for launching and positively promoting new training projects. Since 2019, we have been pioneers in launching the training program on ‘Social Impact Assessment,’ which has trained over 210 people and currently boasts five editions. From October 9th, we will do the same with a specific focus on investments and tools to ensure that our local fabric and companies are increasingly oriented towards issuing new instruments and choosing new financing markets,” explains Silvana Secinaro. “We will do this together, for the institutions of the region, primarily the Turin Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with the Center of Competence for Social Impact Assessment within Turin Social Impact, as well as central cooperatives such as Consorzio Il Nodo for Confcooperative Piemonte Nord and Inforcoop Ecipaa Piemonte for Legacoop Piemonte.”

Financial inclusion for young refugees and migrants through training and business mentoring, thanks to the SEER program

Today marks the launch of the SEER program (Seeking Economic Empowerment and Resilience for refugees and migrants), initiated by YBI, Youth Business International, an international network of organizations dedicated to supporting young entrepreneurs. This program encompasses training and guidance initiatives aimed at facilitating employment and business development, thus fostering economic and occupational inclusion for young migrants and refugees under the age of 35 in Germany, Ireland, Italy, and Sweden.

Within this program, Microlab is committed to supporting approximately 400 young migrants and refugees in Italy over the next 12 months. This support will include free training and business mentoring to empower them with the confidence, knowledge, and skills necessary to secure formal employment or embark on entrepreneurial endeavors.

The European program will be executed by four members of the YBI network and aspires to assist 1,500 young migrants in overcoming the challenges they face in achieving economic independence, whether through traditional employment or entrepreneurship.

In Italy, there are over 5 million foreigners, comprising 10.4% of the national workforce. Furthermore, more than 600,000 active businesses, constituting 10.6% of the total, have been founded by migrants. Despite the relatively high employment rate among the migrant population, various risks of economic and social marginalization persist. These risks stem from fragmented labor relationships, low wages, and informal employment, which are characteristic of sectors where migrants are predominantly employed.

The SEER pilot program also aims to identify common challenges and best practices in supporting young migrants and refugees in Europe. This effort will result in the creation of a toolkit of resources to be shared within the global network of Youth Business International.

To achieve this goal, collaboration with various organizations in the refugee assistance and entrepreneurial sectors is planned. Among these organizations is TERN (The Entrepreneurial Refugee Network), facilitating a fruitful exchange of expertise to better support young entrepreneurs from migrant and refugee communities in different contexts and geographical areas.

GOOGREEN MARKET – Harvest in the city

At its second event of the season, the Googreen Biodiversity Market returns to the Sambuy Gardens – in its special edition on the occasion of Portici di Carta 2023 and in conjunction with the event La Vendemmia a Torino – Grapes in Town.

From 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. the seasonal excellence will be represented by Maestri del gusto e del Paniere, food and wine presidia, small but excellent producers from our land, garden masters and sustainable economy, united in the evocative setting of the gardens in front of Porta Nuova.

On the occasion of and in collaboration with the event La Vendemmia a Torino – Grapes in Town, Giardino forbito will inaugurate, together with Annalena Benini, the first didactic flowerbed cultivated with vines, part of the SEMINATO project, the crowdfunding campaign for the sustainable evolution of Giardino Sambuy. A small vineyard, symbolic and representative of the lands of Piedmont’s literary wines.

In the morning, the appointment with the Pizzica and Southern dances and the free workshop with the masters of the Paranza del Geco returns.

For the first time at the Sambuy, Arianna Abis’ Poetry on Token plays the role of a sleeping character who waits for passers-by’s token to tell her poems, nursery rhymes and illustrated stories. The technique she uses is that of the kamishibai, an ancient Japanese method of storytelling: illustrated plates are placed in a wooden case and the spectator sees the chosen image while the narrator tells the story.

The day will close with the customary Ape-ritivo in collaboration with the Slow Food Metropolitan Pollinators Community to celebrate the commitment of the first association founded in Italy for the knowledge and protection of biodiversity and pollinators.

LET THE BAD SPEAK by Exo Art Lab

Let the bad speak presents the works of seven artists from Iran and Afghanistan: Elmira Abolhasani, Hoda Afshar, Elyas Alavi, Armin Amirian, Hangama Amiri, Latifa Zafar Attaii, Naseer Turkmani.
The common thread is the heartfelt desire to establish an intercultural dialogue, which deconstructs the classic interpretative categories of the Middle Eastern scenario by drawing attention to the events and stories of the people who come from those contexts.

Bad, in Dari/Farsi, means “wind”. The wind is also, metaphorically, the voice of the Afghan and Iranian people. Every year, for 120 days, it visits Afghanistan and the Iranian plateau, howling impetuously across their steppes. The wind can collect stories, making them travel beyond borders. With its intangible essence, it embodies transience and, yet, it is the best master in showing how to survive in uncertainty and impermanence. The title of the exhibition – appealing to a fortunate assonance with the English word bad – aims to summarize the desire to fight any superficial ethical polarization between “good” and “evil”, the desire to restore the word to the Iranian and Afghan population and the choice to observe their situation beyond the stereotypes, in its complexity, without neglecting its surprising contradictions.

Through a plurality of media, the protagonist artists will not fail to evoke unexpected consonances between the Afghan-Iranian scene and the rest of the world. Working on themes such as the relationship between personal identity and uprooting from the motherland, the intertwining of cultural memory and individual biographies, Let the bad speak paints landscapes in which everyone can see themselves reflected, recognize themselves and re-discover themselves.

On Saturday 7 October, for the first time and only on that day, Fondazione 107 opens a temporary space to the public in which it presents Amen, a site-specific project by Federico Piccari. The artist presents a complex project in which bronze sculptures interface with paintings, videos, photography and installations.
The exhibition takes place in an atypical territory, an abandoned shed where neglect and the passage of time have left their traces. In this place we do not find the parameters of the typical museum or art gallery and the works integrate with the abandoned objects, giving rise to an infinite chain of meanings.
The central categories of existence become temporariness, vertigo, the difficulty of accepting the other from oneself.

They are restless and disturbing signs perspicuously captured by Federico Piccari’s thirty-year research which penetrates the cracks of reality to grasp the flaws, the ambivalences, the loss of meaning. Nothing is as it appears. His works, diversified in the multiple techniques presented, always lead back to the impenetrable reality that lies behind appearance, to the ontic fragility that characterizes the contemporary human dimension and defines its ambiguity. Also underlining the need to recover “humanity” as a founding element.

NEET phenomenon: an online meeting of the ecosystem

Within the framework of the Community of Practice project, implemented with the contribution of the Turin Chamber of Commerce and the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation, an online meeting was held on Tuesday 26 September on the phenomenon of Neet (Not in Education, Employment or Training), young people not engaged in study, work or training.

The meeting was attended by 19 organisations that in various ways share an interest in the issue, with the aim of stimulating an initial discussion on the project initiatives put in place by the players of the ecosystem.

The meeting was also attended by Alessia Gianoncelli, Director of Knowledge and Programs of EVPA, the European network that brings together over 300 organisations dedicated to impact finance. EVPA’s Impact Week will take place in Turin from 22 to 24 November 2023 and the NEET theme will be among those addressed in the rich programme of workshops and conferences.

After the greetings and an introduction by Torino Social Impact, the organisations of the ecosystem shared their mission and the progress of their projects and initiatives regarding the NEET phenomenon. On the whole, the shared aims are aimed at improving the psychological well-being of young people, employability, the prevention of school drop-outs and drop-outs, training pathways, as well as the development of scholastic and personal skills that look towards effective pathways of socio-economic empowerment.

The second part of the meeting focused on a collective discussion on measuring the impact of NEET initiatives by the organisations present.

The Fondazione per l’architettura di Torino, in pursuit of its mission to promote and disseminate the quality of architecture, has organised a cycle of five meetings, from February to November 2023, featuring five of the most interesting and innovative studios, collectives and individual professionals on the Italian scene.

Face To Face – Architects in Contact is a five-stage journey addressing different, specific and highly topical issues, open to all and, in particular, to those involved in the design and transformation of places and spaces from an up-to-date, inclusive and sustainable perspective.

The appointments will take place in the presence and in the evening from 6 to 8 pm, in the spaces of Combo Torino and for those who wish, it will be possible to conclude the meeting with a moment of dialogue, direct confrontation and conviviality between participants and guests, at the bar and/or in the courtyard of the venue.

After Fosbury Architecture, Sex & the City and Annalissa Metta, on 9 October it will be the studio Nemesi Architects that will take the stage at Face To Face. Founded in 1997 by Michele Molè and directed since 2008 in collaboration with Susanna Tradati, Nemesi Architects stands out in the contemporary architecture scene for its ability to combine Italian identity and avant-garde in its projects.

At the basis of the studio’s philosophy is the project conceived “as a real instrument of investigation from inside the deep structure of contemporaneity, like a laboratory in which spurious materials, coming from different contemporary aesthetic expressions, interpolate themselves, opening up new and unexpected possibilities of configuration”.

The meeting will be an opportunity to explore Nemesi’s design approach with an in-depth look at the recent innovative Campus project on the Olivettian TESISQUARE® model, in Cherasco.

Through the work of landscape architect Elisa Campra and agronomist Laura Storero, SEMINATO was born, a project of sustainable and participatory evolution for the park in Piazza Carlo Felice.

The ecological walk of the Community of Practice on the Circular Economy

Sunday 24 August saw the Clean Up Day Torino, an ecological walk in the northern parks of Turin. The event was organised as part of the Community of Practice on the Circular Economy, a project funded by the Turin Chamber of Commerce and the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation.

The activity was proposed by Green Growth Generation, an organisation working on issues of community and sustainability practices, and designed in collaboration with Bici-T, which provided a cargo bike and took care of transporting the collected waste to the nearest ecological island, and Panacea Social Farm, which offered a light break at the end of the route. In addition, Mercato Circolare, Cooperativa Esserci, OffGrid Italia and Atelier Riforma actively contributed to the event and its dissemination.

The morning was a chance for participants, 20 in total, to improve the environment and collective wellbeing, as well as an opportunity to socialise with other members of the community who share the same passion for environmental protection.

The route

The walk started at 10 am at the Bocciofila Vanchiglietta, Lungo Dora Pietro Colletta 39/a. The participants walked through the Crescenzio park, then on to the Pietro Colletta park, where there was a short stop and a break with delicious crostini prepared by Panacea Social Farm. The loop then closed at the initial meeting point, and the collected waste was transported by bici-T to the AMIAT collection centre in Via Amedeo Ravina, 19.

Established in 2010 and supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, EIT InnoEnergy builds connections worldwide by gathering innovators and industry, entrepreneurs and investors, graduates and employers. As a major player in sustainable energy, EIT InnoEnergy is very active in fostering innovation: its current track record includes over 200 portfolio companies on their way to generate €110 billion in revenue by 2030, €9.7 billion in investments raised from external partners, more than 370 patents filed to create commercially viable technologies and over 300 products launched into the market. Recently, EIT InnoEnergy also announced the successful completion of its private placement round of over €140 million of equity: the proceeds will be used for increasing new deal flow, accompanying the portfolio companies in their growth.

Personae is a Call for Startups that will select up to 10 start-ups, which will receive

The Acceleration Programme

The programme is part of the CDP Venture Capital National Accelerator Network, a network present throughout the country to help the growth of young companies specialising in high-potential markets. Set up on the initiative of CDP Venture Capital Sgr and realised together with SocialFare | Centro per l’Innovazione Sociale and a|cube with a total budget of EUR 6.1 million, Personae sees the participation of SocialFare Seed, a|impact – Avanzi Etica SICAF EuVECA and Fondazione Italiana Accenture ETS as co-investors and benefits from the support of main partners Fondazione Compagnia di San Paolo, Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Cuneo and Fondazione Social Venture Giordano dell’Amore. CEB and PerMicro: Europe in support of microcredit

Turin, Friday 15 September 2023.
The event “CEB and PerMicro: Europe in support of microcredit” took place today at Ersel’s headquarters in Turin, during which the Governor of the Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB), Carlo Monticelli, announced the granting of a 12 million euro credit line in favour of PerMicro.

The Programme

CEB provides loan programmes to microfinance institutions in Europe with the aim of promoting entrepreneurship and self-employment, supporting the creation and development of micro-enterprises, thereby contributing to income generation, job retention and creation, and the financial inclusion of vulnerable populations, rural communities, women, migrants and ethnic minorities, with the aim of addressing regional disparities, income inequalities and gender imbalances.

The loan from this programme will support PerMicro’s portfolio of loans to enterprises to finance their investment and working capital needs. The credit line granted by CEB will allow PerMicro to provide loans with the following characteristics:

  • the final recipients are micro-enterprises, including start-ups, which employ fewer than 10 people and whose annual turnover or annual balance sheet total does not exceed EUR 2 million (EU definition of micro-enterprises);
  • the loans will have a maturity of between 24 and 72 months and will not require collateral;
  • at least 25 per cent must be granted to women’s enterprises;
  • refinancing is not allowed;
  • loans to traders or tobacco producers are not allowed;
  • other sectors not allowed, in addition to those prohibited by PerMicro’s code of ethics (arms, pornography sector, betting): mining sector, waste treatment incinerators, sectors involving animal experiments, real estate, financial, nuclear, sectors harmful to health or the environment.

The scenario

Italy has the highest number of self-employed workers (2.2 million) in the EU and is identified as one of the EU countries with the highest number of entrepreneurs (0.6 million). Furthermore, the country has the second highest population of foreign residents in the EU (9% of the population). Italy also has significant gaps in terms of entrepreneurial activity and financial inclusion, especially for the most vulnerable groups.

Microfinance can have a positive impact on these challenges facing Italy by promoting entrepreneurial activity, self-employment and economic development. Italy has the highest estimated financial gap for microfinance in the EU, with an estimated unmet demand for microcredit of around EUR 2 billion per year, representing around 15% of the total financial gap in the EU.*

The provision of microloans enables financially excluded people, particularly those without collateral and without a credit history, to gain access to credit. This type of financing is often used as a means to encourage increased self-employment (often facilitating the transition from unemployment to self-employment) and to support the formation and growth of micro-enterprises, playing an important role in the implementation of EU policy objectives. PerMicro’s client base is made up of financially excluded clients who are granted a loan with the ultimate goal of accompanying them towards bankability.

The estimated social impact of the Programme will be considerable: by adding the gender dimension in lending to eligible enterprises, this impact will be based not only on the number of jobs that will be retained or created, facilitating access to finance and entrepreneurial activity for existing micro-enterprises or start-ups, but also on reducing gender inequality.

Social Impact of PerMicro

A research conducted by Centro Tiresia of the Politecnico di Milano analysed the social impact of 11 years of activity (2009-2019) of PerMicro:

  • Unbanked people who became bankable: 6,335.
  • Jobs created: 2,452.
  • Increased government revenue (Irpef and tax revenue due to increased income and consumption): 111 million euros.
  • Reduction in public expenditure (reduction in state subsidies and administrative costs): Euro 17 million.
  • On average, each financed enterprise created 1.3 jobs.

The reception of people with a migration background or seeking political refuge represents a challenge for society as a whole, in terms of social inclusion, which means “access for all citizens to basic resources, social services, the labour market and the necessary rights, in order to participate fully in economic, social and cultural life, and to enjoy a standard of living and well-being that is considered normal in the society in which they live”.

Very often, the social inclusion of people with migration histories passes through financial inclusion that allows them to have access to basic services for their families, self-employment opportunities, and thus the possibility to see themselves projected for the long haul in the new territory they inhabit.

The meeting will focus on the opportunities offered by the Microcredit tool, for an aware access to credit and to start up projects of migrant citizens’ enterprises and families.

Meet the CSR Leaders 2023, new generations meet sustainability professionals at Il Salone della CSR – the CSR exhibition

In the eleventh year of Italy’s leading national exhibition for the CSR community, Il Salone della CSR e dell’innovazione sociale, takes place the second edition of Meet the CSR Leaders, the project that allows new generations to meet sustainability professionals. Promoted by the Salone della CSR e dell’Innovazione Sociale in partnership with Amapola, the sessions will be held during the three-day event (4, 5 and 6 October 2023), at the Bocconi University in Milan.

Sustainability professionals will be available to meet interested students in a special area at the tradeshow. Students may book a direct one-to-one orientation session lasting approximately 30 minutes with an expert. During the meeting, they will be able to discuss sustainability issues and learn how to plan a career in this field.

The professionals will be available at these times:

  • Wednesday 4/10 rom 10 am to noon and from 3 to 5 pm
  • Thursday 5/10 from 10 am to noon and from 3 to 5 pm
  • Friday 6/10 from 10 am to noon

The second edition of Meet the CSR Leaders

The project is in its second edition. In 2022, the initiative was divided into 3 days of meetings for 10 hours of one-to-one orientation and involved 43 young participants, who were able to meet and dialogue with 23 Sustainability Managers. Webinar – The impact of digital communication: towards neutrality and inclusiveness

What concrete tools can be used to launch an integrated sustainability and accessibility strategy? This will be discussed at the free webinar – registration required – “The impact of digital communication: towards neutrality and inclusiveness” scheduled for Friday 6 October 2023 and organised by Merakyn in partnership with SustainMe, Siti Accessibili, GreenCome and the support of Artera and Joomla! Lombardia.

Digital can be a transformation enzyme for people, the environment, models of society, as well as a tool for building a better and more sustainable future. Although technological innovations can help solve environmental problems, the ICT – Information & Communication Technology sector as a whole has a significant CO2 footprint. It is the so-called digital paradox: while technological innovation enables the ecological transition, its environmental footprint is undoubtedly significant.

But how energy-intensive is digital business and digital processes compared to a traditional business? It is estimated to contribute at least 3.7 per cent of the world’s CO2 emissions compared to 2 per cent for air traffic (source: Karma Metrix). In fact, the Internet produces around 1.2 billion tonnes of CO2 annually, equal to the annual CO2eq emissions of Italy, France, Spain and the UK combined. All of this is growing at such a rate that it predicts a potential impact by 2030 in which the Internet would generate around 10% of global emissions (source: The Shift Project).

This is why the topic of ‘sustainable digital’ is becoming increasingly relevant. According to research by the Global Web Index, 61% of Gen. Millennials are inclined to pay more for sustainable or eco-friendly products, while 80% of Gen. Z respondents consider it essential for brands to implement green solutions for their products.

At the same time, in terms of a systemic sustainability strategy, another aspect of social impact also needs to be explored, namely the issue of digital accessibility, which now involves around 87 million disabled people (visually impaired, deaf, etc.) in Europe. A mass of people that has prompted the European Union to take action with the EAA – European Accessibility Act, due to be implemented by 2025, when all platforms (sites, ecommerce, etc.) will have to be fully accessible to people with disabilities according to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), in addition to the various regulations and best practices already existing and currently in place.

On these topics, on the occasion of the Milano Digital Week, Merakyn – Benefit Society and consulting agency specialised in communication and sustainability – is organising, in partnership with SustainMe, Siti Accessibili, GreenCome and with the support of Artera and Joomla! Lombardia, a dedicated webinar to explore these issues in depth.
